Square Enix polls consumers on DS titles

Japanese giant ponders which back catalogue titles to bring to Nintendo's double act

While Nintendo boasts of strong third party software support for the [newly redesigned] Nintendo DS console, at least one publisher hasn't quite decided what to do with it - with Square Enix now asking consumers which of its titles they'd like to see on the platform.

The giant Japanese publisher has included a polling card with copies of Final Fantasy I + II Advance asking customers which titles, from a list of many of the company's best-loved classics, they'd like to see on the new handheld.

Included among the options are Final Fantasy 3, 4, 5 and 6, the SaGa series, Front Mission, Chrono Trigger, Legend of Mana (Seiken Densetsu) and Hanjuku Heroes - presumably indicating a fairly comprehensive shortlist of the games Square Enix is considering for the platform.

The company is also thought to be developing some original titles for the DS, and demonstrated a number of concept titles at the unveiling of the hardware at the E3 trade show in Los Angeles two months ago.

Source.

What would you choose! :?: 8)

I think Chrono will probably win also, although the combination of FF IV and VI (II and III US) would be one hell of a deal. While VI got most of the recognition as the best of the old school FF games, I really think that IV set the stage for the whole cycle and was the best of all the FF games.

The cast of characters was awsome, and Rydia friggin ruled. :)

Oh my fucking GOD.

IF THEY PUT CHRONO TRIGGER OR FF3 ON DS, LIKE WITHOUT UPDATING IT, STRAIGHT UP PORT I'LL DIE.

And I"d also be the FIRST person in line for a new DS too :)

Sounds like Paul hated it. :p

Can't you play that in emulated form on a variety of handhelds already?

I pretty much think they'd HAVE to update it. Though in this case "updating" could just mean "making use of the two screens." I can't imagine Nintendo allowing any games through that don't go at least THAT far.

boooooooooo ;)

FF6

They really should update the music with the orchestrated versions.

Eh, they won't do it, but Seiken Densetsu 3...

More realistically, SD2 / Secret of Mana would be awesome - multiplayer on separate screens would make it so much more playable and fun.

Though yes. Chrono Trigger would be by far the best bet... though I probably wouldn't buy it. I played it so much on my SNES... hehehe

Is there a reason they can't do most/all of those on the GBA ? The DS is backwards compatible with it anyway. Seems like a pretty stupid question.

It is not stupid ;)

It is just that in the first year of a console, especially at launch, you can sell pretty much anything, so why not a repackaged 16 bit RPG.

That, and the fact that Square-Enix must have advantages (less royalties To pay) because they are developing early DS titles. So, a cheap 16bits port can 1) drive consumers, that are fan of the 16bits game, to the DS and 2) make mucho dineros for Square-Enix.

And DS got 2x the 2D power of the GBA. Of course it's all about the money though. The announcement alone will sell plenty.

NDS also has cheaper media. For SquareEnix there's also the added advantage of being able to influence the launch. Companies that are on-board from the start tend to be rewarded with increased marketshare.
