As most cars have front wheel drive nowadays, I think spoilers on the back mostly spoil the performance of the cars. I'm not even sure if spoilers on rear wheel drive cars actually have any use except on the circuit, as the only time you can use the extra downforce is when taking a corner. And at that time the spoiler isn't doing very much to help. And they add to the gas consumption.
But, I guess they're there because people think they look racy.
