Well that is awesome. I always thought that a vehicle launched from a jet made more sense :) Glad to see somebody doing it.

what a flight , , though the rolling last week looked spectacular , it also looked very-very scary .. .

never realised i could hold my breath that long :)

now , can i get £100,000 in 4 yrs ;)

The thing I wonder about that craft is the fuel. I know it uses laughing gass and rubber tires. Not to be raining on anyones' parade or being a tree hugger but I wonder what kind of pollution does that put out?

Just look at the smoke coming from the tailpipe; black as fuckin charcoal. It certainly isn't sugar and spice and everything nice that's for sure. We're likely talking major carcinogens here.

"Best of all, the hybrid engine's chemical byproducts are water vapor, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen, which are less toxic than the shuttle boosters' byproducts."

I think the black smoke might be particles of partially combusted rubber compound, or just carbon black.

i hope carmack and the other teams dont give up. Competition can only drive costs down, and it might lead to better designs.

If the solid fuel really is made out of old car tires that means there's fair amounts of highly toxic MDH oils in the rubber compound, plus other shit too that the tire manufacturers added. Any unburned rubber that exits through the nozzle will still contain that stuff, and like with diesel (and to a lesser extent, regular gas) engines, microscopic carbon particles can also be a serious health threat.

A study done in urban US city areas (not sure exactly where) showed teenagers have lost as much as 10% of their lung capacity due to particle emissions, so this is certainly not something to be scoffed at.

I thought they already got to 100km. Didn't they? Or was it a "two trips within X days" deal?

And btw. Carmack had a realy cool toy. But he never ever were anywhere near being in the contest. (On the paper yes, but no way that he could have competed for real.)

2 trips over 100km. These 2 trips won the x-prize because they were within 2 weeks of each other.
