Sony running out of PS3 dev kits

TOKYO--Sony Computer Entertainment is starting to ship out its development kits for the PlayStation 3, but it's facing the same issues it had with the PSP. According to its own officials, the company can't manufacture enough to meet everyone's demand.

In an interview with Jiji News, SCE president Ken Kutaragi revealed that his company has shipped more than 100 PS3 developer kits to game publishers in Japan, America, and Europe. However, he also stated that SCE is running out of parts, and it can't ship enough units to meet the requirements of the publishers.

Presumably, the PlayStation 3 is slated for release in spring 2006 in the US. For more details on the PS3, check GameSpot Hardware's complete coverage of the console.

Well at least we know how many devs have dev kits. :?

100 shipped and they're already RUNNING OUT OF PARTS? That's a joke, right? If its Cell yields are that bad, they'd better switch to Intel CPUs for PS3, just like Apple did for the new Macs! Steve Jobs was right all along, IBM sucks and Sony fell for their lies! Buahaha... :devilish:

I'm just kidding BTW... ;)

I thought ps3 dev kits went out awhile ago.

They did. The opening GS comment is misleading.. - that's their own (wrong) commentary, not word from Sony or Kutaragi.

There aren't that many compaies that have PS3 dev kits. What were most of the "game" demo's at E3 made on? well that's a good questions isn't it. I still only know of a handfull of the game demo's that were real.

Most companies only have a few kits, most likely. And the suggestion seems to be that these were kits shipped to third party publishers - internally amongst first party devs there would undoubtedly be more. I don't think it's difficult to reconcile the E3 showing with this number of kits being with publishers.

duckie demo , fight night , unreal 2k7 .... what else was there ?

Deanoc said heavenly sword was wasn't as simply as realtime or prerednered and from what i udnerstand of his post they simply had the game engine render the scene which would make it not real time .

Anything else ?

lol, such obvious hype. if they were truly having trouble meeting dev's interset, why would a Sony rep come out and make a public statement about it.

"Just wanted to let you all know that our product is in such high demand we can't keep up.."

I usually try to substanciate my posts with more than a simple smiley, but...

Thank you, Steve Jobs, for the internet laughing stock you provided this week.

Heavenly Sword was likely having its frames rendered by a PS3 kit, though, not any old computer. Deanoc may like to clarify if he can. (But again, NinjaTheory would be a first party dev - the 100 kit comment refers to kits shipped to other publishers).

"Games" aside, the tech demos were almost all realtime on PS3 kits (and you're missing some games at that, I-8, Eyedentity, Warhawk - methinks - etc.). If you're counting tech demos, there were plenty - Doc Oc, The Getaway, "leaves", "terrain", Luna, Gas Station etc.

Exactly, I would think that heavanly sword would be rendered on a ps3 kit. I wondered what that kit consisted of.

So we have about 8-9 things that are defs and another 3-4 that are mabyes ?

A full list of "definite" realtime or "ps3 rendered" stuff shown at the conference would be:

"Leaves"
"Terrain"
Gas Station
Ducks
Luna
Fight Night
UT2007
Heavenly Sword
Doc Oc
The Getaway
I-8
Eyedentity
Fifth Phantom Saga
Final Fantasy VII
Vision GT
Rockstar's Western (looked realtime to me)

The maybe list may include:

Warhawk
Nioh
Devil May Cry (?)
Tekken (?)

If I'm missing any, feel free to correct.

How can something be "simply" realtime if the final hardware doesn't exist?
It's either a cut-down version (With less effects, lower resolution, lowered IQ), or a video rendered frame by frame using the game engine.

BTW, the topic is "Sony running out of PS3 dev kits", not "let's stir shit up again with the boring thread#18562 about Sony E3 Demos".
Eventually we could derail this topic to thread#18562 about the PS3 demos if, and only if, we had new informations about those demos.
You know like someone saying that one of his friend from a West New Hamshire CGI studio rendered the rubber duck demo using a renderfarm composed of six millions of very smart hamsters. Or something along those lines. :p

Heavenly Sword
deanoC said its not that clear cut . SO disagree till he expalins better

Asides from opening scene with the girls face, it was I believe rendered by the kit, if not at realtime framerates. I did qualify at the start of the list that it was of realtime or "ps3 drawn" games.

Final Fantasy VII

This was certainly realtime (or using a similar technique to HS).

guys I said "game demos" not tech demos. now revise your list. ;)

I thought that's what we were talking about too, but then jvd mentioned tech demos :p I'm sure we can all work out what's a game and what was just a demo.

So, this thread is now officially PS3 Demos Thread#18562.
Great! The cliff hanger at the end of the Thread#18561 was too much of a tease...

Deano explained what Ninja Theory did for this trailer. Clearly.

Final Fantasy VII Tekken
disagree , the rest looks okay with me , except mabye vision 3d
Final fantasy VII was in "real time", it had texture shimmering and aliasing.
Tekken was a CGI, indeed.

In some demos, like motor storm, there was a interesting BUG. The screen was split in two parts not synchronized. Like two GPU working together in SLI. This would be the proof than the video was realtime?
Sorry my poor English.
