Great news.

But I think they said there was no market for Arcade shoot em ups anymore....

This interview from last month has a few more details about the game:
  • AAA
  • Story is an important aspect of the game so they've naturally hired a narrative designer and writer
  • Learning new tech/skills in the process
  • They started pre-production on it a couple of years ago
  • They had 60 people working on it at the time (1 month ago) which is x2 or x3 more than previous games
  • They can hopefully talk about it a year from now (So maybe during a PS5 game reveal event)
  • Gameplay is still core for them, so explosions and visual effects will still be present
But they continue to use crazy particle. They use UE4 for the new game but their own particle and VFX engine. From a job announce on Housemarque site
https://housemarque.com/careers#op-394358-vfx-artist

Housemarque is looking for a VFX Artist for an unannounced project!

We're looking for a VFX Artist to join our award-winning VFX team. Whether you're a rising talent or a seasoned veteran, the role will be tailored for you. We expect you to hit the ground running but also make sure you have the tools and the support to be successful. You will be working with top industry professionals making Housemarque's most ambitious and exciting game to this day.

At Housemarque we use proprietary tech for creating visual effects. In addition to that, we use Houdini for pre-rendered elements. VFX Artist’s role is to create those pre-rendered elements such as smoke, fire, debris, explosions etc.

One narrative designer comes from Remedy

Watch the CEO interview, he said the game keeps the arcade gameplay roots and the crazy particle system:

Shuhei Yoshida when he was first party head visited them and it seems he was very happy about what he saw.

Housemarque send a newsletter today talking about the history of Housemarque and saying they enter a new era maybe Sony bought the studio?

I would literally die if Housemarque released an insane voxel-based game, a bit like Resogun, but with even more next gen eye melting goodness.
This is a game I've loved since the 1980s since it first appeared in the arcades as Defender, through the 8-bit era as Drop Zone, up to the logical conclusion of Resogun. I'd love to find a good Defender-clone on Switch.

Feels like there's a great influx of horror games come next gen which I totally adore! We got Quantum Error, Resident Evil 8, Silent Hill Reboot, Medium, Scorn and potentially something horror from Dead Space Writer's new game. Not to mention Kojima san apparently wants to make the scariest game ever for his next project. Silent Hill among them all is my most anticipated tho, especially it's rumored to be made by the original team.

I just hope some come with VR support. Took me a year to finish RE7 in VR, but hell did I enjoy it!
