Sony: "Nintendo DS is for kiddies!"

Here is Masatsuka Saeki, executive vice president of SCE, on TV Tokyo news program World Business Satellite. I don't have the exact quote from Saeki, but the caption that sums up his statements is at the bottom:

"The first purchasers of the PSP will be adults. For the Nintendo DS, it will be the kiddies."

Yes, he actually said "kiddies"! (Actually he said "okochama", which is a more familiar and brusque version of "okosama," a polite way of referring to someone's children.)

This may go down as one of the greatest quotes in game-industry history, even on a day when people worldwide had already been busily trolling away at the Nintendo DS's launch lineup (revealed today at events in Seattle and Tokyo). I attended neither event, so I can only comment on what I've read, but so far I'm a little disappointed. There are few good titles, yes -- Kimi no tame nara shineru, of course, as well as Goemon and Nintendogs -- but there's a ton of rehashes and an equal amount of games that just look awful, which paints a grim picture of DS third-party support. Nintendo's lucky, IMO, that the PSP's game lineup is so incomplete at this point, because otherwise it'd be darned difficult for the system to compete in direct comparison.

Ah well. Back to work! It's holiday time, and that means I get to play lots of fine games day and night... great for my mind, but terrible for my body.

According to Nintendo themselves, the DS is aimed to a younger audience, was it 15-20 year olds? Whereas the PSP is aimed at 20 and above.
They must be 'kiddies' in the eyes of Matusaka Sakeki guy. Hell, even I'd call a 15 year old a kiddie, and I'm not that old :)

I guess those who are insulted by that comment are the "adults" that are thinking of buying a DS, as that makes them feel like they are thought of as "kiddy"... hey, there's nothing shameful to be juvenile! It's just ok to play with DS even if you're not a kid!

Nintendo has said NDS is targeted at 18-20 yr olds. Regarding the launch lineup as an indication of poor 3rd party support...what are you smoking?

Didn't PS2 have a less than stellar launch lineup? I guess that must mean PS2 has poor 3rd party support!

When you downplay others work it's prolly because your own is pretty average...
If your work is good, it'll speak by itself, no need to downplay others work.

Anyway nothing surprising from SONY, it'll remain on my boycott list.

Hmm... looking at the launch lineup... there doesn't seem to be too many games that would appeal to the average 18-20 year old :?

Of the 12 launch titles, 7 are developed by Nintendo, the rest by 3rd party. Still, those 3rd party titles seem at least to me as not being so called "big titles" (to be honest, I don't know what kind of game for example Spike's Kenshuu-i Tendou Dokuta is :? might as well be a mega title)

I don't really see that comment as downplaying, more a known fact. Nintendo products are known to be targeted to younger audience, kiddies even. Even Nintendo has admitted it.
Thoug with DS they say they are targeting a slightly older demographic, but still it can't be denied it'll be mostly kids that play them.
They can't just shake that image by saying "now this we aim at 18-20 year minor adults" if the games do not reflect that audience.

Simple scratch and draw games, picto chat etc.. they are what have been demostrated. Only thing more adult has been the Metroid game, which is not released at launch.

Just building a handheld that is too big to be comfortable in below 10 year olds hands, does not it a product for adults make.

Essentially, by their actions, they are targetting the DS to kiddies.
But by their words, they are trying to reassure the adults that DS is for them too.
Clever... might work until the lauch hype has passed and if the more mature games do start to appear then that's ok.
But the launch is delibrately "kiddie".

Hence, I give it a PC-Engine style  ;)

I don't know about the rest of you, but IMO, one of these new handhelds is going to end up bombing like the N-Gage. Here is a clue, the N-Gage was the first so-called "handheld for adults". ;)

How many people above 18 yr old do you think will be buying a NDS? How many of them will be buying at least one of these "kiddie" games? ;)

You see how futile the kiddie argument is? ;)

Umh.. some... at least.
But will they be happy long enough with something kiddy like picto chat, wario ware? I think not, they're just too simplistic for 18 year old.

Maybe they're not too simplistic for a 30 year old, but 18 year old is more conserned by his "adult image" than a mature 30 year old

and that is actually one of the wisest thing you or anyone else have said in a long time.

There were other more damaging things that caused N-Gage to bomb than the fact it was targeted to "adults" (which by marketing talk it was, but by actions it wasn't... here's a clue: we target it to 18-20 year old "adults" who are some of the most dubious creatures the earth carries on it's surface) .....like lousy games, 'sidetalkin', bad design overall that didn't appeal to anyone aesthetically nor ergonomically.

What I am wondering is that will these 18 year olds consider playing video games "in public" the "mature" thing to do?

If it's a PSP, they will, just to show off. But maybe that's just me putting PSP in the same "caste" as the iPod.

PictoChat is not a game  It's a communication app aka an Instant Messenger. How many people over 18 use IM? ;)

18 yr olds buy and play games because it's fun not because it's the adult thing to do...

According to your logic most people over 18 smoke and drink alcohol
