Sony comments on CELL & PS3

How can it be faster? If the spokeswoman only refers to the SPE configuration, then it can have higher clock speed, but I doubt it. By 'full spec', I assume it refers to the 8SPE @ 4GHz spec. To make the PS3 ''faster", you have to put multiple Cell chips, and personally I'm not inclined to think it's viable.

Multiple... multiple smaller... more SPE's... Isn't the whole point to be configurable? And doesn't that basically mean it can play around a lot if they find it overall beneficial?

What were Deadmeat's predictions on PS3 cell chip flop ratings again?

From the searches I did it seemed he had all kinds of predictions, but one he tried to stay with was 1 PE(65nm) at 2GHz and 128 GFLOPS.

Deadmeat's predictions have ranged from 64 GFLOPs to 256 GFLOPs. most of his predictions were 64 to 128 GFLOPs, though.


I'm still expecting 256 to 512 GFLOPs for just the CPU.

Usually when you say "something will not equal another thing", it's implied that it's less, not more.

Usually when you say "something will not equal another thing", it's implied that it's less, not more.

English IS my native language and that was not what was said. Since people have a hard time comprehending what was said: The performance of the cell shown MAY or MAY NOT be the same as the cell that is in the PS3. It could be faster, it could be slower, it could be the same. Also remember that the "cell" is reconfigurable saying that PS3 should be given the "full" spec is pretty crazy. Also if the cell will go into servers, I bet IBM would rather have the "full" spec for its chips rather than let a PS3 be more powerful.

Anything more than 1 PPE - 2 SPE @ 2Ghz would be a waste IMO.

The 8SPE at 4.6GHz version is based on the full specs. If she calls it (the 256gflops version) based on the "full spec" , then can there be a version of the cell processor that is more? The answer is obviously "no". Therefore when she says that PS3 might not be equal to the "full spec" cell processor, she is saying will be NOT more powerful than 256gflops.

Actually 16 Teraflops could be a good guess of PS4 floating point power.
