Some vague ideas for GT5...

They also will have a special Nissan version fo GT4 and a ride simulator at Toyota which uses GT4 technology.

Not to mention the special Nike edition.

Guess they need special editions and product placements to help defray that $80 million in development costs?

Whoops. Toyota also gave out an exclusive GT4 demo disc last summer iirc... make that 16 spereate releases. I think GT's starting to outnumber Pokemon even. :/

Custom cars by taking pictures of them? Amazing if they can make it happen.

It won't happen, you take a picture with Eyetoy of the logo on the Nike T-Shirt, GT4 will decode the logo and unlock the Nike car. :D

Not even close, there's something like 30 games based on the Pokemon IP, already released. ;)

Well, I was thinking more in terms of "real" Pokemon games, as developed by Game Freak/Creatures and not Nintendo outsourced spinoffs. If I'm not mistaken Polyphony Digital's behind all these GT releases, no?

You're right then, except that Tokio/Seoul/Geneva, they were more or less the exact same game, they just were not released in the same part of the world.
Actually, Sony catched this sequeltis with GT4, because if they indeed release a GT4 and a GT4 Online, after GT4 Prologue, that would be, IMO, too much. Let's just hope there's no GT4 Epilogue... ;)

I just can't understand how taking a pic of your car and then transferring it to your PS3, the PS3 could render even as accurate model of the car as in GT4.
Has such technology been used yet anywhere, like in film industry or somewhere? I know there are 3D scanners that can make rather accurate 3D models of real life (smallish) objects. But making a complex 3D model out of a 2D photograph... I don't believe it'll be possible even if the car was photographed from 5 sides separately.

Yes, but previouslt it was fantasized that taking a picture(s) of your car and transferring them to PS3 would make that car playable in GT5.
I see it is no technical feat to unlock some car that is already on the game disc by showing a certain image to the cam, but how could a console (or a computer) render an accurate model of a car based on a 2D photo???
Has somethin similar been done already with some supercomputers? Is it possible with curent or near future image recognition technology?

Well it is possible, in theory, all the PS3 would have to do is to extrapolate the silouhette of the car, from at least 3 angles (front, side and i top) so as to have enough data. Sounds a bit tricky to me, especially the top shot.

How about the physics for that photographed car? How would it know how the car handles? Would there be some database where the game fetches the appropriate physics after it has recognised the car make and model?

What if one uses his dog instead of car?
If I photographed my dog (had I one) to GT5, would I be able to ride my dog? What kind of physics model would GT5 apply to the dog?

Rabid... too much coffee...

Sony might set up an online database, updated every so often, where you could choose you car from a list...

How about this? This is my theory

Polyphony has a database of all the cars they support and their physics. They only put a number of cars in the retail version of thegame let's say 500 but they have a database of 1000 on their server.

GT5 wil have something similar as Digimask but then for cars. http://www.digimask.com/ps2.html
You take a photo of your car in profile and then from the front and you can send it via usb (digital cam) to the PS3. (I don't understand the Eyetoy stuff because it would be very unpractical to drag your PS3 and eyetoy and tv outside to your car :? )
You can then mark reference points on the car like the Digimask stuff for your face (nose, ears, chin,...) and the PS3 makes a model.
You can then connect to the GT5 server and the computer can recognize the car from the reference points or you can input the name of your car. The server then sends the physics to the hard drive. If your car is not available then Polyphony will work on it and sends you a message when it's available for download and it stays on the server for other users. But I think they will charge 5$ or something for this service :)

:? How do I drive my car (had I one) to my living room so I can take a picture of it with Eye Toy :?

It seems they didn't think of that, is this an indication to the overall design quality of PS3? Teh SONY engineers must suxx for letting such a huge flaw slip through! Consentrating on the PSP SONY has clearly lost its focus!

Tell me you were joking, please.

If the next-gen PlayStation came with wireless controllers, I bet you would be using the same excuse about backwards compatibility, wouldn't you? The point is, just because it belongs to the PlayStation does not mean it should remain identical to the previous version otherwise it would not be called next-generation. This Eye Toy Sony was talking could be like a web cam that you can detach from your PC and take pictures else where.

Well, I would have probably said the samething about Tony Hawk Pro Skater if I hadn't seen it for myself. This is probably how the Eye Toy will work. Only the outer side of the car will be rendered over a model taken from within the game.

Well, I was joking all right ;)

Still, I don't think "Digimask" or some similar technology would be accurate enough for modelling your car.
It hardly can make a recognisable face in games it is used currently, and I don't think the technology would advance so much for next gen (which is not that far away).

I'd say you're reading waaay too far into that quote. What I read in that quote is talking about using EyeToy for texturing your custom vehicles, not modelling them.

And I would think physics issue is the most trivial - just provide a database and let the user enter car model name.
