Some US Black Friday sales numbers

I'd take the free stuff thankyouverymuch (in this example anyway). $300 worth of goods > $200 worth of goods.

Don't forget, you're paying sales tax on the full $199, not on the $99 "eventual" cost. For those of us in California, for example, that can be a real deal breaker on some of these rebates and gift card deals.

Sony had alot going for it this black friday. The new slim with lower price really helped them. I don't know how ms would have competed or what deal they could have done except another $100 gift card on black friday.

I think next year things may be a bit more even or could actually switch back in ms's favor if ms comes out with a console shrink of their own and natal could prove the more popular of the two gesture controls or they could go to $100 - $200 . Of course sony has more prices drops too and could have some big games also.

I think it's far too early to predict how the HD twins will perform on next year's BF. Who will be leading in sales in the previous weeks leading up to BF? What will the prices be for the respective systems? Will there be any significant releases near BF? Will there be any bundles released specifically for BF like Sony did this year? How much of an effect will the motion controllers have, if any?

They could have had more appealing bundles.

They could have slotted a major exclusive--the slippage on ME2, Alan Wake, Splinter Cell, etc has been pretty brutal. We all knew coming into this fall their exclusives were the weakest they have had.

And that is what happens when you fire all your 1st party studios...

Mabye , but on the flip side sony has had a ton of duds in the first party / second party line up so its hard to judge it . Spend alot on internal development and risk games not selling or cut back first party titles to your big guns and thats it.

At any rate with ME2 in febuary then alan wake in june and splinter cell and the next halo lined up next year it could be one of their biggest years combine that with natal and a possible system shrink and they could have a major boost like sony did with the ps slim. mabye even bigger since halo reach will be bigger than anything sony released this year.

Nobody wanted to compete with Call of Duty for sales. ME2, Alan Wake and Splinter Cell will come out when they're finished. I'd rather have them out later then have them rushed.

360 lineup has actually been ok on the exclusive front with ODST, Forza 3(though a disappointment) and Left 4 Dead 2 (number of 360 copies unknown, potentially 1million +).

Actually AC2 bravely picked up the gauntlet - we'll see how well it sells. Initial reports are good, but I don't think the first game was that heavily front-loaded. Then again word of mouth is a lot better this time, so maybe a lot more people may decide to jump in through the holiday season.

Oh, and it'll be interesting to see how the platform exclusives are selling against these two multiplatform giants...

Well, Bungie being let go wasn't something they could avoid, from what I gather the core people at Bungie were threatening to jump ship and quit if the company didn't gain some sort of independence to chart their dev plans. MS obviously still wanted them to continue churning out Halo titles. Interestingly enough they gain independence but continue with the Halo series in Reach. I'm wondering if they have another title they are working on in addition to that.

Most of the other devs let go, while excellant studios (Age of X and Flight Sim teams for example) were mainly PC centric. And MS has basically moved away from PC games publishing for the most part concentrating instead on the console side of things.

Letting go of many 1st party studios basically impacted the PC side of things far more than the console side of things. MS has never had many console centric first party studios...

SB

Wasn't it like a 6 million-seller? What's most interesting is that AC is entirely single-player, not an MP mode in sight and it still sells well.

AC1 sold more then 8 million copies altogether on its three platforms. Which is why I'm pretty interested to see how a game better in nearly every way is going to sell...

Not just that, the console install base has increased too. So on paper, it should do better than AC1 "proportionally speaking".

I'm on the fence for AC2 at the moment. Don't know why yet. ^_^

However, that increase in install base has to be offset against an increase in games on the market and time on the market. If you look at the top best selling games, you'll find a surprising number of games that came out early in the lifecycle in the top 50.

What did AC launch to in terms of competition again?
I think it was the Halo holiday season, 1 week after COD4 MW.
Must be all the PC purchases. ;)

That's true too ! But if they're not in direct competition, it _should_ be ok. Some will get it later instead of on day 1. We will need to look at the total title sales instead of monthy top sales though.

Black Friday is all about the best deal available. Sony blew everyone out in that respect and got deserved sales.

Someone stated earlier that MS had a CoD4 bundle? What an insult to consumers.

The game is still $40 new.

But isn't the cod 4 bundle on top of the two games already packed in ?

The game being even $60 new is irrelevant as it has a sequel out that is clearly the talk of the town. The 2 pack in's are garbage also. Games need to be relevant to count.

In my opinion, MS conceded this holiday when they announced Natal for fall 2010. The Natal announcement meant "we are not doing a price cut this year, but we will have a big one in 2010." These results are not at all surprising to me. MS is conceding this holiday, much like Sony did last year. It might be a worthwhile strategy, waiting patiently while Slim and GT5 pass, which were going to be big competition no matter what MS did. There's a lot riding on Natal and the re-marketing that will be associated with it. It's a gamble and a gutsy move. I predict a massive push of 360/Natal by MS in 2010, and then their next-gen console announced at E3 2011.

That has been my belief for a while, Ms needs to focus on cost reduction and Natal and make a significant push next year.
