So who's thinks their predictions were right about the nV40?

Just curious. I think I was underestimating what it would bring to the table and I find myself delighted to be wrong. :)

How's about you?

Same here, I seriously was getting worried about another nv3x debacle with all the rumours flying about.

But it looks like nvidia (for the first time) made good its claim that 2x performance is what's being looked at.

That said, I can't wait for the r420 to come out and some head to head benches being done.

i was right.

anand didn't realize HQ AF was intentionally broken

what's my prize?

I underestimated its performance on just about everything except farcry :)

I figured it would be able to push it around 50 FPS at the highest rez and it appears so.

I am uber happy about the AA fixing but kind of bummed about the AF being toned down :(

The rest is all gravy and look forward to seeing what ATI brings to the table.

I was massively overestimating pretty much everything about it.
*sigh*
Heck, even my predictions about NVIDIA's new "model" were too optimistic. WE WANT A BLONDE NVIDIA. A B-L-O-N-D-E.
Errr, getting back on track

No, seriously, where the NV40 *did* impress me is the AF implementation (I was assuming 8x AF max, and IMO being *able* to do angle dependancy is a GOOD thing, not a bad one), the VP, the VS architecture, and the overall very solid feature set (which I knew about anyway, but NVIDIA's marketing is so good that it actually feels better now ).
I was however let down by the clocks, the weaker-than-I-was-told PS power, and the poor 8x AA implementation.

Oh well :) Pretty good card anyway hehe.

I have to be honest, I expected NV40 to be a total dissapointment. Boy was I wrong! It is a very impressive piece of engineering, nVidia has done themselves proud. ATi we await your reply.

Well, if we go back to January, and my post over at NV News (first public NV40 benchmark numbers, remember)...

UT2003 1600x1200 = 190fps
UT2003 1600x1200 4xAA/8xAF = 100fps
Halo 1600x1200 = 50fps
HL2 1024x768 = 95fps

Seems the information I received at the time was underselling the card as it would stand at retail. Probably not deliberate on the part of the source, but nice all the same. For more amusement:

50FPS in Halo at 1600x1200? Maybe it's NV50.

 Although, to be fair, it seemed high to me at the time. My only mistake was listening to all the doubt spreaders just recently, rather than going with what I was originally told.

I still expect the R420XT to come out on top in the likes of FarCry though.

Am I right about Toms too. I haven't read the review yet.

EDIT
I am right.

Nice piece of silicon.

However, I find my biggest disappointment to be the performance in Far Cry from both a fps and IQ perspective. I realize that there are issues with regards to ver. 1.1 of the Far Cry patch. I will retract my disappointment if Far Cry is run in pure PS2.0 with equal IQ to the 9800XT along with a nice improvment in fps over that same 9800XT.

Too bad nobody benched the 6800U on Tiger Woods 2004...a very PS 2.0 intensive application....

It seems to be an application issue at this point... PS3.0 is not being exposed though (due to the drivers)

Pimping your game eh? :)

Couple of points,
I guessed the performance would be great.

I overestimated the FSAA. I can't believe Nvidia still can't surpass ATIs.

I missed the AF downgrade completely. I don't understand why Nvidia would loose their slim IQ advantage in this area. By doing so they can't really claim any IQ superiority.

Ultimately I think I'll sit on the fence with the NV40. In some respects its features are very good and in others it appears they set their sights on mathcing the R3xx series IQ as opposed to beating it hands down.

I know I sound like a broken record but it does demonstrate just what a good job ATI did with the R3xx series. I only hope they don't decide to rest on their *laurels*?

Edit = Typos

The same reason why ATI has implemented it a long time ago...performance is a lot easier to sell than "our Aniso looks better at 12 degrees angle."

laurels :D

All of this ultra info is great but since the only Nvidia card I'll consider is the plain 6800 I'm looking forward to reviews of both companies' midrange cards.

oh come now Joe, that's so last seasons line ;) I thought we were finally going to see the end of this notion and set a 60FPS milestone with maximum quality. Not to mention the fact that as we become more and more CPU bound IQ will end up IMHO king of the hill.

*laurels* Thx trinibwoy, I'm lost with out my spell checker and the lack of proof reading before I submit clearly shows.

In all seriousness....that will never happen until someone is able to establish an "image quality benchmark" and sum up the results in a single number.

So...never.

The fact that it's actually more important doesn't make it easier to sell. ;)

Yes because in shader benchmarking, this game gives current cards one helluva workout with the 9800XT performing 50-80% faster than the 5950U, especially in the higher resolutions....would like to see how the 6800U fares is all.....

I didn't allow myself to get caught up in all the speculation/predictions this time around & still will wait until retail cards & WHQL drivers are reviewed before I start jumping up & down. Same goes for R420/423, etc. ;)

"Better to be thought a fool then to open ones mouth & remove all doubt."
