I don't think the NV30 needed ATI to show that it had major problems.

Yes, ATI did an amazing job with their R3x0 series of chips, and it also really showed how solid TSMC's 150 nm process was. Their overall execution of the R300 and later chips really forced many to look at NVIDIA and consider, "What exactly were you guys thinking?"

I believe they felt 130nm low k would have been up and running and the 500mhz clocks the nv30 hit would have been just the beging. I figure they felt with a solid 200mhz lead in clock speed they would destroy the r3x0 which was on 150nm and would have had problems hitting 300mhz. I think when they saw it hit 320 on the first revisions they pissed thier pants and new they were screwed .

I honestly didn't think ati would pull out such high core clocks
