Sega Sammy reports $444.46m net profits April-Dec 2004

It's sad that we are entering a new gen without a SEGA console. If they are serious about HW, then there's no rush...

They need to consolidate/ strenghen their Arcade divisions, launch some triple AAA next gen titles, evaluate the other consoles positions next gen and if any of those players are struggling, maybe then they could target a console re-entry 2010+ ...

Definitly I can see Nintendo dropping out after the revolution and then SEGA re-entering.

And what of MS? without the technological advantage how well will xbox 2 fare? if it does the same numbers as xbox or even worse then will they do an xbox3?

The only certainty for 2010-2011 is that Sony will be there. Both MS and Nintendo I'm not too sure about.

Something for SEGA to be thinking about.

I can't imagine it going that way due to the financial realities of these companies.

Microsoft couldn't lose enough money on Xbox 2 if they tried to even begin to offset their billion dollar quarterly profits. And they're a very good business company, who will continue to offer a progressively more attractive product that will naturally gain fans.

Nintendo persistently generates the kind of gluttonous profits that Sega Sammy have, so they'll be able to do whatever they want. And why would they want to change such a healthy business plan unless they felt strongly that giving up royalty-free, first party revenue for the competitive third party market would not only turn out much different than it did for SEGA's consumer software division, but would beat their old plan?

Sony's the only one struggling for profit, and I could foresee difficulty for them competing head on with Microsoft with probably only a tenth of MS's spending cash flow if Sony don't succeed well enough on any of their expensive investments.

I don't see SEGA returning to hardware any time soon. There are very strict goals that are laid out in front of them. If the videogame side cannot make profit from games then there will not be a new console. Some may live in a fantasy world where SEGA will come back to the reign as a console maker but that isn't going to happen without the actual games that PEOPLE want to buy.

SEGA as of now is lost to the world of gaming, it has to regain it through software, not hardware.

Sony is in a lot better shape than some of you are lead to believe in regards to the consoles.

I think microsoft could have a technological advantage, or at least a tie.
If PS3's gpu has its vertex shaders stripped out so cell can do it instead, and cell isn't all that it was made out to be then microsoft could have an advantage(plus cell is tied up doing graphics), and with nintendo's supposed focus on not having power they may not be a threat either.

BTW, I think nintendo could make some major headway next gen, they certainly have the ability too, but they need better management. I think if NCL let NOA have more free reign then they could fair much better in the American market.(or put Sega of America in charge, they were always pretty daring)
I don't think a Japan oriented company can really know what's best in America, and an America oriented company can't know what's best in Japan, there needs to be more seperation between NOA and NCL. They have to act as seperate companies, NOA has to be allowed to court developers and push features that are important in the American market.
