Second Shipment of PS3 in

Regular
EB/Games and Gamespot has received their second shipment.

If you are one of those that got pushed to second shipment for your pre-order they may have yours sitting there.

Good luck.

You mean Gamestop. It'll be very interesting if an online gaming website got thousands of PS3s.

How big is the shipment?

From what I've heard each GS/EB was getting 4-8 more units total (20gb and 60gb units). Not an insignificant amount, but it isn't a ton -- GS said they were expecting ~weekly refreshes though, so 4-8(?) a week per store (and not including refreshes of the other chains), and you've got a steady supply of units coming in. Still not the most optimal, but it's nice to see shipments come in.

@Shark Sandwich: 200k units total 'til the end of the year sounds a bit weird, considering it's likely there was more than that available for launch (it seems they didn't meet the 400k units, but I'd bet they got over 200k).

What Bobbler said, they are getting 4-8 or so units. So if you didn't pre-order don't even bother.

Next week Tuesday you should try again though, or even Saturday. All pre-orders should likely be filled if the weekly shipments are maintained.

I wonder how many GS/EB stores there are... 200-300?

According to: http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/04/18/news_6122418.html in 2005 there were 3200 stores in the US alone.

5-10 seems overly optimistic if not improbable. Especially with all the other chains to feed with units as well. Your talking about EB/Gamespot getting about 150k of the PS3 shipments till the end of the year. NO SHOT that is happening.

Great job ! So they are air-freighting them in every day ? (And then dispatch to different chains once things pile up sufficiently).

Not sure why I said 5-10 the second time -- I meant 4-8 both times. I think the average is probably on the lower end of that range too, fwiw (~5). At 5, we're talking about 100k units for GS/EB by the end of the year -- they may be giving them more at the moment because they know they have outstanding preorders though... who knows.

I think this is limited to the chains that got their preorder inventory slashed. Talked to local Best Boy. They are not expecting any shipment and have not be told of any upcoming ones.

I still think 5 is being very generous. Also, there would be no reason for Sony to give priority to EB/Gamespot because they have outstanding pre-orders. I am sure there are many other chains as well who have plenty of outstanding pre-orders.

On top of that, the chains are the only stores who make out like bandits with pre-orders. There is no financial advantage to Sony supplying stores who outsold pre-orders.

Well, strike that. Other then knowing they can sell the units once shipped to those chains. BUT, at this point, Sony can ship anywhere knowing the units will sell.

When you start taking into account that other HUGE chains such as:

Best Buy
Wal-Mart
Target
Costco

5 a week is very optimistic. Plus you have to start taking into what kind of numbers we will actually be seeing shipped each week from Sony. It's all just a matter of wait and see at this point.

A tiny, tiny part of me feels for the jokers that pre-ordered, but I am sure 75% of them just want to sell it on Ebay anyhow.

...

After thinking about it (and R1's post), I have a feeling they are giving them priority at the moment -- Sony very likely overpromised them at first (hence them having to call some to tell them they weren't getting their unit at launch). GS (EB and whatever stores they own) are the only ones with preorders -- no other chains in NA offered them, as far as I know (outside of Toys R Us and they were met all their preordoers)... smaller stores (local mom/pop game stores that possibly offered them) probably didn't even get any units.

We'll see next week what happens though. I wish we got weekly numbers like they get in JP (Enterbrain?) -- would be interesting to watch (at least we can see how Japan gets refreshed weekly)

Now we are back to the speculation a bit. Much like you are assuming Sony 'owes' EB/Gamespot X amount of PS3's because Sony promised to have them available for launch, I am speculating no way Sony is gonna do it.

Sony had to cut down it's shipments to ALL stores regardless of Pre-Order. Sony makes/gets nothing additional from EB/Gamestop because they took to many Pre-Orders. Of course EB/Gamestop is going to take X amount of pre-orders. That's just more money in their pocket sooner and not having to supply any product.

My main point being that Sony 'owes' PS3's to a TON of places not just EB/Gamestop. No way Sony is going to divert 20-50% of their weekly shipments to EB/Gamestop so they can fulfill pre-orders. I expect Sony to have a much more diverse and evenly spread number of shipments to their retailers. Especially over the next few months once demand starts to lighten up some.

Some fun with numbers:

Lets be generous and say your EB/Gamestop took pre-orders for 50 people (160,000)
Lets be generous and say your EB/Gamestop received 10 PS3's for launch (32,000)
---
Pre-Orders left to fill=128,000
---
Lets be generous and say Sony will ship 10 per week to each EB/Gamestop over the next 4 weeks (128,000)
---
Pre-Orders left to fill=0

Now realistically we know this is NOT going to happen. Even if they would receive 10 a week, which unless magic pixie dust starts getting sprinkled around in the Sony fabs, it's not gonna happen.

To sum up, Sony won't divert more shipment to EB/Gamestop because EB/Gamestop over sold pre-orders.

Do you know I was at Wal Mart last time of Xbox360 launch, they got ~50 units? I talked to an Wal Mart electronics employee this year, he said they got FOUR PS3's. Although these were different Wal Mart's, they are both 24 HR with similar store size. Puts things in perspective for you. And remember, people thought microsoft really botched the 360 launch, at that. You cant even compare the two.

Recall here NPD put down microsoft for 326k 360's sold in Nov 2005.

Now, I dont think 360 shipments was a factor of ~10 greater than PS3 launch as my informal Wal Mart information suggests. For example, I also heard the local Best Buy got 28 PS3's, and IIRC that was about the same as 360's last year. So I'm sure it varies by chain, Wal Mart seemed to get the shaft with PS3. Then again, Wal Mart IS one of the biggest chains, to put it mildly.

Bottom line I'm expecting NPD PS3's Nov. to come in 150-180k. 200k sounds reasonable as well. Just be advised we're dealing with vastly lower numbers than even the tight 360 launch.

I've heard we might see ~weekly replenishments of 50k on PS3. 1/4 the original shipment. So you might see 200k more before Christmas.
