SCE's coming Siren, the scariest game

Spoilers maybe... but a lot of this info has been printed in a few publications.

Consider how SH's creation was influenced by other works such as "Jacob's ladder", and the same director is working here, it appears that there is some Lovecraftian influence, mixed with traditional J-horror. The theme of "returning to the sea", the scenario of nearly an entire village's populace turning into "something" and the protagonist(s) trapped in the village, the presence of a strange cult that practices unknown ceremonies - quite Lovecraftian.

I also have "Jacob's Ladder" DVD and think the first parts of SH3 is quite similar to it.

Bought Siren today, this is the first PS2 game that comes with 2 big warning stickers.

And a surprise that the same shop has Axel Impact Korean version (which can also be played on Japanese PS2), I bought it together with Siren.

I will post my impression on them later on.

The transision from a world to another reminds me of Silent Hill 3. Is that orange wraist band of Heather and the boy in Siren a coincidence ?

Siren.....looks like SH has some serious competition....Siren...then Fatal Frame2...

isnt Siren being one by the original SH team? that's what i read... if that's the case, it would be internal competition :D

Fatal Frame 2. Thank you.
This Siren...looks much like a SH + FF ripoff...tries to be both, master of none. The same boring slowmo SH-like hackfest....swing a pipe, shoot a gun ~~yawn~~ where is my tension?... At least the monsters are more scary than SH moving meat lumps.

Where is the tension? it certainly isnt in taking pictures of ghosts.. Fatal Frame is a very weak series..

it's in the stuck in a house of the dead type tension. the gameplay kinda grates after awhile (they start cranking up the difficulty to the point that some of the later bosses are ...amusing).

it's very good alternative imo

Correction. SH is a very weak series. ;)
Have you even played FF? The tension comes 2 fold.

1)Be taking the pictures will be throwing you into first person mode, thats right face dudettes, right up close face to face with those damn ghosts!

2)Unlike the clunky mechanisms and oft-slow meat lumps in SH, the ghosts in FF are more unpredictable. Some can zoom and disappear while others can dash at you least expected, all in FP mode.

I wouldnt even mention the nicely done Japaneses style ghastly atmosphere.

And before someone say taking pictures is corny gameplay, i tell you again, Ghosts + Pictures = Match made in Heaven(or should i say Hell! ) Thats right buds, both of em are closely related since like, eeehhh, the first publicly documented ghost sightings?

Do you need to know Japanese to play this game? ARe there subtitles in English?

Yes. And no to the second. Maskrider can verify. Sorry.

And the second trailer was just uploaded into the official site. So take a look.

OT:
If anyone is using xine-rc2, can you try the "xine <url>:#save&lt;filename>" on movies on that site? I can't get it to save properly - it just creates a copy of the (what do you call it)"link file".

The game does not have any kind of subtitle.

I play them with my limited Japanese knowledge. I will usually miss something in my the first run through in a Japanese game, ha ha. :p

edit: read a guy in GameFAQs that he claimed that he is debugging the Chinese version of Siren (believe it or not), he expect there to be an English version.

I would rather have English/Japanese subtitles than other language voice acting as it destroys the J-Horror without J-voice acting.

Guys, stop with the "correction" nonsense. Opinions are like assholes--we've ALL got 'em.

Silent Hill was the first Su.Ho. game to really capture my imagination, so I'm a bit biased on it's part. I STILL love the overall tone and handling of it all. But ALL the games can be enjoyed different ways and have their strengths and weaknesses. Haven't played RE0, but overall I think RE is the weakest of them as in the beginning it mainly leaned on freshness. But it's never really had a great atmosphere, or engrossing stories, or as imaginative "horrors" to fight, or even much to offer in shock value after the first few barge-ins. Leans on combat first and foremost, and quite frankly isn't paced much faster than Silent Hill. (Just seems to because SH is out in the open-air a lot, so you start seeing/reacting to things at more distance.) I currently love Dead Aim, though--more freshness and I think it really takes to RE's style. No-bones focus on combat, but this time with a personal feel and just a lot more FUN! ;) Certainly spices up the light-gun games as well.

And I'm not sure why so many people think everything is supposed to be encountered and defeated the moment you come across it. I loved in SH that I could run past any number of things because I wasn't forced to maneuver in corridors and cramped quarters. The purpose was to not get hurt and conserve ammo, right? People seem to forget that and try to fight everything with a 2-by-4. Frankly, I think this is a much more interesting way to handle the outside, as everything is still wandering around looking for me, and the heightened tension is eternal. ;)

I love SH for the overall tone and handling of ever-growing creepyness and freakish situations, over the backdrop of an interesting story, imaginative and detailed areas, and a wide array of places to explore. (I've also loved their lighting since the first.) I enjoy Fatal Frame differently, as it embodies the "haunted house" theme, also with imaginative scenes and transitions, and a different take/pacing on the combat. (Damn fun to peer through all your old pics and save the creepies ones, too. ;) ) Clock Tower ends up being more of a head-game and psycho-thriller, which has differing appeal and lets the developers explore their creativity in another manner. Eternal Darkness many new elements to both storyline and combat, and through it lets one explore a wide range of characters and circumstances--not to mention one of the coolest/most-fun things in Madness! (C'mon, I KNOW you've all wandered around fully mad just to see what they throw at you next. ;) )

Not all styles fit all people, but as always I think gamer are best served by enjoying what the games offer rather than seek out in everything what they think they want.

I actually just like the quality. English voice actors have improved tremendously, but we are talking about the land of anime, where voice acting can be a well-respected profession.

There's also the deciding factor: Japanese voice actresses. :D I accept no substitutes over the kawaii voices.

dubs are fine, somtimes they miss the tone of scenes but that's the price you pay for translation an media where there isn't a one-to-one mapping of concepts.

does anyone know the date for a US release?

*horrid memories of english dubbed Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Mobile Suit Gundam, and others*

Given the choice, I think I'd always pick J-voice tracks in Japanese originating games.. it just fits the style. Although I think Kingdom Hearts would be an exception, because that clip I saw of Donald Duck in Japanese was just MESSED

Oh, and I guess FF X would be an exception too, perhaps. Tidus was great, Auron (though a gruff 'badass' in Japanese) was also excellent.. as was Wakka and Lulu, but Yuna I wanted to kill. Lord knows I'll have to sit through her monotone retard voice for another 40 hours in FF X-2....

Seiyuu++

Japanese voice acting is still MILES above us, though we've been improving reasonably enough. (I wish big companies like Square and Capcom would take more time to do the english dubbing particularly well, though, since they can afford it and should want to stand out.)

Well like I said, it depends on the origin of the source material. The VA for KOTOR was some of the best I've ever seen, and I couldn't imagine it in any other language.. however, I think that's mainly because this is a western game, with western license.

Off the top of my head, looking at my shelf..

MGS2 - Great VA, kinda wished it had Japanese dialog
Devil May Cry - Usually cheesy Capcom VA, bring on the Japanese dialog
Silent Hill 3 - Excellent VA, has that trademark 'creepy' VA work. Keep it in English :)
FF X - see above
ZoE2 - Ugh, pretty brutal, but I think that's just because of its Anime roots. Japanese VA plz!
Fed vs Zeon - Ugh UGH! See above.
KOTOR - Perfect VA, wouldn't want it any other way.
Halo - I've heard it in German, Italian, French, Spanish, and Japanese.. I'll keep it in English :)
PDO - N/A :p
Ico - N/A :p
