SCE's coming Siren, the scariest game

I watched trailers of both Crimson butterfly (Zero 2) and Siren (and a trailer of MGS3).

Siren re-creates the scary atmosphere really really good, looks very much like watching a Japanese horror film, and it is a lot more disturbing than SH3 from the footage.

Here is a disturbing snapshot

Comparing to Siren, Zero and the new Crimson butterfly are not as scary IMO.

The game will be out on 6th of November, I think I will buy it.

And here are some MGS3 pics (not very good captures)

well in truth they are both trying for different approachs to the horror genre. the same can be said of the SH series where 'strangeness' and slavation/damnation are touched upon.

That's why I said IMO, it is all IMO.

Siren disturbs me the most. The atmosphere is just so much disturbing than the others.

I may be paying money to torture myself this time.

Disturbing GOOD! ^_^ I like all the different styles that can fit in the genre. Plenty of good S-H games out there.

Fatal Frame 2. Thank you.
This Siren...looks much like a SH + FF ripoff...tries to be both, master of none. The same boring slowmo SH-like hackfest....swing a pipe, shoot a gun ~~yawn~~ where is my tension?... At least the monsters are more scary than SH moving meat lumps.

it's does not look like tension is the aim of the developers here. and that sfine too. looking forward to how this turns out.

I really hate those slow style dumbass hacking/shooting of SH. BORING.

At least in RE, there is more pace in the action. SH action seems so much like fliers, something they have to put in, rather than what they want to put in. Useless in the scare factor, just to irritate you with the clunky aiming and constant BORING hacking/shooting since they, like have, purposedly enhanced life <-> bullet ratio( KCET: "yeaey! lets give our slowass monsters tons of life! It be scarrry!!!" ) ~~yawn~~

that's your perogative and you are entitled to that view, but remember you have FF2 to look forward to while some of 'are' genuenly interested in how this turns out.

I hear this alot and it is a fair comparision, but remember some of us actually like SH mood, direction and the in the horror not of ourselves but what the dev attempt to present to us. (int he case of SH it is the revulsion of both the flesh and the mind which is lightly touched upon)

I conced that in effect SH (in particular) stops being a 'game' in the traditional vein and tries to approach the 'novalisation' genre which is evolving nicely.

I think KCET should REALLY cutback on the crappy action sequences and concentrate on environmental scares. Even still, i prefer FF ghostly atmosphere.

I dont tink SH stories are that great. Well part 2 is something interestingly cool. But 1 and 3 are typical videogaming story.

again your opinion is valid (after all you comprise a set of the audience these guys are trying to sell to), but what if the aim that the devs are going for is categorically not to go for any type of scare?

for the record, I was not refering to the story. and whether you think it is great (or not) or not wasn;t what I was trying to articulate here. interesting would be a better word I suppose (keep in mind I'm a little into horror novells myself so there that appeal for me too).

btw I found part 1 was the tribute, part 2 the exploration of the meaning of evil, and part3 the rememberence closure for the series arc. it's quite a common composition.

Not trying to put one series over the other, but RE is not really fast paced, and SH is certainly not a fast paced game. You can run in both game and avoid the trivial ones and just fight with the bosses. And SH is not aimed to provide intense action.

From what I see, the game play of FF2 is similar to FF, just that the base story is different and the main gadget is the camera. I will also get FF2 once it is out.

Siren is really like a Japanese horror movie to my eyes, the exploration seems to be pretty interesting and the art style is really Japanese horror style. Like the movie the Ring (the first one), sadako is not a fast moving ghost, but yet the thrill/scare is pretty intense to me whenever she appears.

Let's see how it turns out. I have bought a new pretty good quality MPEG-2 capturing device for my PC and I can make some movies from the game.

This Nov and Dec are deadily expensive months for gamers, so many games, Mario Kart DD, Siren, R:Racing Evolution, Super Robot War Scramble Commander, ..., damn.

Since many things were brough up, some things to mention...

1. Siren's director is the same man who directed the original Silent Hill.
2. It has received glowing reviews from all publications to date.
3. Actually the system of contolling many different characters at different times makes it more similar to Juon than The Ring.
4. All animations, including the Shibito(undead) are motion-captured. On the official website, there's a video of the "protagonist" (main one) dashing away in fright. Though a cut-scene, that was really well done.
5. The Shibito were modelled by having a makeup artist work on samples first.
6. Since the Shibito are already dead, they cannot be killed. It can be defeated temporarily, but will get to its feet after a while. They also retain some memories of their former life, and can employ weapons and firearms. Evasion is the best option.
7. Every review pointed out that it is a difficult game. Major contributing factor being the conscious design decision of not including a map. So the protagonist must rely on the much advertised "special vision" to keep an eye on the surroundings. With no map, this means that throughout the adventure, the poor souls are trying to reach certain objectives or locations without even knowing where they are, fumbling in the dark and fog with Shibito crawling around...
8. The official site actually has some very nice sound samples and a few video clips.

OT:

1. Where Zero:CF is concerned, the chosen art style appears to focus on a mix of "ghostly beautiful" and "eerie frightening". Siren's art style and direction is similar to what one might expect from J-horror movies.
2. Where the SH series is concerned, I feel the latest installment is most uninteresting. "Dumbed-down", sort off. Probably sold to a larger audience. Maybe.
3. Personally, I'm still debating about SRT:SC. Reviews are a bit mixed, so I'm waiting to see what Dengeki has to say, as I find their review system more consistent.

Thank for your info. I haven't taken the time to read more info online than the coverage on Famitsu PS2 magazines and the Famitsu Wave DVD. I think I am really torturing myself by buying this game, but damn, let's see. I feel like vomitting when I first saw that scene that I have posted in my first message in this thread.

The reason I mentioned The Ring was not because it is similiar to Siren, just to use it for my point that slow paced can still be very very scary.

For Zero, I think Tecmo is really good in creating beautiful or realy nice looking girls (I like the gals Tecmo created, especially those from DOA, ha ha).

And back to Siren, I don't know how much it is taxing the PS2 as the environment is re-created really really good from the footage I saw.

About SRWSC, my purchase is more about nolstagia. Much like the reason I am buying VF series games.

The Doom3 "flying-heads" thingees? I thought they are the subject of much ridicule on many forums?

From the screens shown I don't think this title will be remembered for its technology, though devs on these boards are better suited to comment on that. It will be remembered for art direction, "feel", and gameplay. Of course, sound effects and motion-captured Shibito are a plus.

How are reviews for SRW:SC coming along?

Siren will be available tomorrow, I will be sure I don't miss the chance to get it earlier. From the people who played the demo (at the stores, also showing the demo), this has to be one of the most expected horror game.

Got 4 games today, FF7 PS (for US$10, I only have the PC ver. before), GCN RS3, GCN Mario Kart DD and XB Crazy Taxi 3 (because cheap enough, around US$28 new for a non-platinum version).

Recorded a play through for MK DD but it is too big even in WMV for full resolution. And so does RS3, the bump mapping on the water looks nice.

For SRW:SC, I didn't read any review, as the reason I bought that was because of the robots, not exactly the game. :)

I will post some impression of Siren tomorrow, in terms of graphics.
