I'm waiting for the Vive price announcement. I'm more interested in the Vive than the Rift, but price is a factor, and if it is more than a thousand euros, I don't think I'll be able to get it, at least for now.
The only sited (that I know of) game I want to play is Elite.
On the other hand, Hover Junkers and Budget Cuts will be different games on the Rift, and Budget Cuts looks very fun!

I'm still sure it didn't cost $0 for google to make it. So I don't see your point. Cardboard isn't free and as I've said cardboard is a loose term and there are cardboard kits made out of plastic and other materials that cost more than $30 upwards of $50 avalible.

IIRC It also comes with a couple of lens. Im gonna order one now that oculus Rift has priced itself out of my range, If I dig it then I may look into a proper solution later, once theyve all released and reviewed

@zed Google cardboard is sold under 10 dollars but the bom is 20 dollars. It's weird. How can the bom 2x the price.

Btw Google cardboard devices have so many variations and the cheap ones usually have really bad chromatic aberration even after properly configured.

I use RIEM2, it's only 10 dollars, have nice straps and plastic body and the chromatic aberration is only on the outer edge.

    So my oculus saga continues.

There is yet another even earlier preorder. So I've gone from the 33 to the 31 to the 30 to the 29s.

I just got a cardboard mailed to me from my company, because they are doing some VR promotion materials. It's printed in company design, logo, colors etc. From the looks of it, that can't be much more than 2 euros to make ...

I just got cardboard 2, Looks a bit more than 2 euro's its got a couple of lens as well as a strap that I have no idea how to attach.
At 1080p the resolution is good enuf, the framerate is more of an issue.
So what are everyones suggestions for apps to try out?, I have no controller.

I recommend a time in space and vanguard v. It's a bit heavy but give nice scale and experience.

To keep the frame rate high, you can:

    • disable the throttling (all LG Android should have this, dunno with other brands)
    • Play fully charged while connected to power.
    • Use flight mode
    • Remove the back cover

Edit : vanguard v is on rails shooter. A time in space is an roller coaster in space.

Cheers I tried the vanguard v game, I sort of want to turn my head like a steering wheel to move sideways. But over all not that impressive, what's some other impressive demos?

Cardboard only have rotation sensor. So only rotational supported. No sideways.

You can rotate your head left or right.

For other stuff to try, I recommend CINEVEO virtual cinema with 3D video.

Various youtube 360 video in 4k also awesome as long as Google did not disable 4K in your device.

If it's disabled, like how Google disabled it for my device for some baffling reason,

Try the square Enix just cause 3 vr. It have high quality video for vr in 3D 360 degree

carboard has no sensors, its all in the phone which has 6DOF, so handles rotation on all 3 axises

Looking at video in VR is not really what I want to see after all the thing with VR that you want is the feeling as if you're actually in the action, you want to move and look around something.
Watching a video with VR is pretty much the same as watching it on a big screen closeby

Cardboard device must have gyro for rotation.

    Compass is optional.

If have no gyro, the cardboard won't work

Edit: agh pressed reply before finish typing.

It handles rotation well but no leaning. For leaning, you need to add external sensor and filled yourself.

With cardboard, you can't get the 'presence' of in the action.

But if watching 360 3D video* only feels like watching big screen TV...
Maybe your cardboard have too much latency?

For me, the YouTube app have more latency than the Paul McCartney app or the muse video clip. But the YouTube app have less drift.

*is there a simple way to search for 360 3D video?

    It's 360 4k 3D. But no positional audio.

Actually, I have not found any cardboard app that have positional audio except "chair in a room".

Btw when watching youtube 4k 360 3d video, make sure to manually select 4k resolution.

But on most phone 4k resolution is disabled... You need to use OGYOUTUBE.

Sorry for the bold. It can't be disabled. I pressed the B but it keeps bolding

mate most phones have gyro, I've accesssed the data myself in some of my IOS/android programs I've made, sure you have to cancel out the initial orientations, but most API's have some helper functions that make this easy, I'll download that paul maccartney thing

    Most expensive phone have gyro.

Cheap phones, even android one labelled, often don't have gyro.

Without that, cardboard won't work. But if no compass, cardboard still works

Some cardboards have magnets (such as the Google ones) and that could interfere with digital compass. Therefore many cardboard apps don't use compass and only use gyro.

I have google cardboard AFAIKS theres no magnet, it uses velcro.
I watched the maccartney song, until the app said 'skipping frames I'll close', and I've got a decent phone!, so will be the same with most people, way to go developers. But anyways I dont want that experience of just being in the one spot and looking around you, to be engrossing you must be able to move in the environment.
I tried out a horror VR game, apart from being very hard to control due to me having no controller, the feeling of walking through a darkened room is far more creepy with VR than doing the same on your monitor, It really was bring gaming to the next level.

cardboard 1 uses the magnet on the side , cardboard 2 has a button you press that then presses on the screen.

Cardboard is useless to me aside from watching youtube 3d stuff

I've tried some of the apps and they are just meh.

I've also used a gear vr and that's just as bad , my friend used a blow drier on cold and had to blow it at my note 5 while using it so it didn't over heat.
