I vote that people will just call it a Nintendo, at least in English-speaking areas. Or they'll just snicker internally every time they say Wii.

And I do hear people using the words, "my Gamecube," or "my PS2," all the time. Why not, "my Wii?"

So, for those of us not familiar with the language, why is that an odd name for a car in Sweden?

Well, the car is named Fitta everywhere else but not in the nordic countries when they realized what that means in Swedish.

EDIT: My memory serves me wrong. It was Honda - not Toyota. Btw, Fitta means c..nt in Swedish.

EDIT2: For the interested: http://jalsbo.com/bus/hondafitta.html (lots of funny slogans in Swedish)

    No, but you might say:
"Do you want to come round to mine to play with my Wii?"

Toyota did keep the MR2 name for France though.

(This has already probably been posted but wth)
I think the register said it best; that its going to be a school yard mockery with rhymes like:
    "I'd rather have a Wii than a PS3"

I think in the USA, we dont' say "wee" for "urine" as much as y'all do in the UK. We do say "wee-wee," but only to little children or in a somewhat humorous vein (and the humor comes primarily from the fact that only little children say they "have to go wee-wee;" it's like saying "I need to use the little boys' room"). "Piss," "pee," and simply "urine" are more common, at least in my neck of the woods. "Wee" is archaic for "little;" we know what it means when a Scot says it, but we don't say it ourselves outside of the occasional Sunday School song ("Zacchaeus was a wee little man..."). It's also used as slang for "penis," but again, mostly by little children.

That's not to say it isn't a horrid name (w00t! Double negative POWAR!!). My prediction is that people just won't pronounce it the same way as "wee." They'll probably make the vowel sound much shorter just to differentiate it.

Mazda is Mazda, but the MX-5 was called the Miata in the states until this year.

i'm being realistic. not everyone is a hardcore gamer. the fact is, EVERY one of my friends whom i've told about this has had a sour look on their face when i told them the new name. i understand nintendo is purposefully trying to alienate themselves, and they are doing SUCH A GOOD JOB. they seem to have completely lost touch with what american audiences want. 3rd party publishers just fucking cringed.

Although we don't use "wee" in our common US vernacular, we recognize it's meaning as penis, urine, and little. As others like Democoder have said, the problem with Wii is not that it's a strange name like Google or iPod or Turbografx. It's that it's just way too easy to make dirty puns with it. Nintendo has traditionally marketed to younger people, and let me tell you, 3rd graders will take a word like Wii and run with the dirty jokes.

Joe: Hey, I got a new Playstation.
Tim: Cool, can we try it after school?

    Substitute Wii.
Joe: Hey, I got a new Wii.
    Tim: What?

What happens when you connect 2 Wiis together. You get Wii-Wii.

Gamers had to put up with the lame joystick jokes for a long time. And now the Wii jokes will be flooding us.

Who is Nintendo taking the Wii out of? Another W and it would be wwii.

Even Bart Simpson couldn't make a better faux pas of this name!
