Yikes... have you seen the tires on the bike in Motorstorm though? A buttload of polys had to be spent on them...

I never noticed that before you said

And this is stil the most impressive thing ive seen so far....

Yeah that dirtbike and buggy are damn impressive, I bet when we start getting high quality video (mainly from e3), peoples minds will start to change about the development of motorstorm.

I don't think you need a buttload of polys to model cubes attached to the tires.

You'd need at least 2000 additional triangles if you had so much as 100 bumps per tire (seems about right if you count the ones in the picture, and that's not counting all the triangles necessary to tesselate the surface of the tire so that your cubes are actually attached to it. Whole cars in GT4 were made of around 4000 polygons, and they've blown at least that many (prolly more) just on the tires of a bike.

Call me crazy but I think the vehicle assets from the E3 target render may be the same as the ones in the real-time GDC demo. Or barring that, the normal maps haven't fallen far from the tree so to speak.

Check it out...

Can't you use quads?

Not if you want them to be actual geometric "nubs"/cubes as these appear to be.

Is it not possible they might be using some form of mapping? I can see these have a sillouette here, though, which would rule out some types. I guess Laa-Yosh answered that question, though.

NANOTEC said:
Huh? A cube can be modeled with 5 or 6 quads.

Oh, I thought you meant one quad per nub. But quads normally are just modelled with two triangles, no? :???: I mean yeah, a cube is going to be 6 faces, quads, or 12 triangles or 8 vertices.

Those that tend to view these videos as proof of false expectations also tend to have been critical of Sony's promises from the start.

I'd say people who view the Motorstorm video as proof of false expectations are people have two eyes planted firmly in their head.

Night and Day, and I'm not even talkng about the backgrounds.

Who cares how it compares to CG, the fact they are doing mud when no other game to this date having done it at this level is the accomplishment here. Give credit where it's due, instead of lambasting them for not meeting CG quality.

It's like you are digging for the negative, instead of seeing the positive right before your eyes.

Since when were you someone to build expectations based on those CG clips last year? Since when were most of us here?

It seems to me, the people most often complaining about how Motorstorm, for example, compares with its CG demo are people who refused to accept those demos in the first place. Why would you be disappointed? FWIW, most of us were there too on this board, I think, well aware of the status of those vids.

Just cause we don't believe Sony, doesn't mean we should give em a free pass when they blow smoke up our ass.

I don't get that logic: You lied to me..but I knew it was a lie...so it's ok. :???:

I never believed the lie in the first place, so it did no harm to me. Was I building expectations based on MS or Killzone's CG demos? No. And I'm pretty sure you weren't either. Don't feign fresh outrage or disappointment - that the MS and KZ demos etc. were CG is old news now.

It's not like I don't see where you're coming from Scooby - I certainly do. If my response to DeepBlue was based on a defense of Sony's 'lies' I would certainly understand you saying what you are; but rather I was just addressing the fact that - whether lied to or not - the majority(?) of people seem to be pleased with what they're seeing in the videos. And certainly... why shouldn't they be?

As far as 'expectations,' Sony at E3 last year is one thing, but there's been so much negative press based on that over the last year that after seeing these videos I think what a lot of Sony fans feel is in fact relief that things aren't as bleak as they'd started to believe they might be after so many 'deconstruction' articles.

Oh...I'm not saying there's anythign here to be dissapointed by, I mean, warhawk and R&C are SICK! I'm not complaining.

It is nice though, after all these months, to see what MS actually looks like. I honestly hope Sony gets absolutely hammered for this, I think reporters have a duty to do it. Then maybe one day, the era of pre-rendered movies will end, or at least, they will cease to be effective, and we can begin seeing real footage from all companies, on equal footing.

This may well happen, especially given the reception at GDC - although that may have primed many journos for surprise at E3. But if it did happen, it would ring pretty hollow if the game still looked better than anything else out there in its field. And it certainly looks like it easily could be.

And that's really what it boils down to for us here, who were awaiting our first look at it. In its own right, independent of the CG, there's a lot of cool technology going on there, and it looks quite compelling, IMHO. Whatever about R&C, I certainly think it has as much "cool stuff" going on as Warhawk, but in different ways.

scooby_dooby, not the whole "they lied" nonsense again. No one is going to win the console race over such issues, so get over it. Sony fans buy Sony hardware for Sony games. Simple as that.
