Ray Tracing Performance In Games in 2023

So Halo Infinite has finally recieved their RT patch، it only adds ray traced shadows, from only the sun, and only in multiplayer maps! Singleplayer support is completely missing, so it's very limited thus far in a very weird way.

As a result, performance drop is rather limited, at 4K the drop is as follows.

4090 drops from 145 fps to 132.
7900XTX drops from 129 fps to 98.
3080Ti drops from 79 fps to 69.
6900XT drops from 79 fps to 61.
2080Ti drops from 55 fps to 48.

AMD cards drop twice as hard as NVIDIA ones. Turing and Ampere drop the same amount, while Ada drops the least.

Also AMD GPUs use 2GB more VRAM in Ray Tracing than NVIDIA in this title, a 4090 only needs 9.5GB, but the 7900XTX needs 11.5GB. So it could be that AMD is caching more stuff, or NVIDIA is optimizng their BVH structures size more.

In Elden Ring, latest game to receive RT, at 4K max RT settings, the 4090 is 54% faster than 7900XTX, the 4080 is 22% faster, while the 3080Ti is 27% faster than 6900XT.

4090: 68 fps
4080: 54 fps
7900XTX: 44 fps
3080Ti: 37fps
2080Ti: 29 fps
6900XT: 29 fps


Continuing on with the rest of 2023 RT titles/benchmarks, in Plague Tale Requiem, using max RT @4K, the 4090 is 90% faster than the 7900XTX, 4080 is 30% faster, and the 3080Ti ties it, which makes both the 7900XTX and 3090Ti almost 80% faster than 6900XT. One of the highest RDNA3 over RDNA2 gains.

4090: 61 fps
4080: 42 fps
3080Ti: 32 fps
7900XTX: 32 fps
2080Ti: 20 fps
6900XT: 18 fps


In Marvel's Midnight Sun, using max RT @4K, the 4090 is 2.3x times faster than the 7900XTX, 4080 is 65% faster, and the 3080Ti 15% faster. The 7900XTX is 50% faster than 6900XT.

In Deliver Us Mars, using max RT settings @4K, the 4090 is 75% faster than 7900XTX, while the 4080 is 35% faster. Curiously, the 3080Ti is also 73% faster than 6900XT.

In Hogwarts Legacy, max RT settings @4K, the 4090 is 2 times faster than 7900XTX, while the 4080 is 60% faster, the 3080Ti is also 20% faster.

In Forspoken using max RT settings and 4K, the 3090 is 20% faster than 6900XT, while the 4090 is 40% faster than 7900XTX, the 4080 is 10% faster.

In Returnal, the 4090 is 62% faster than 7900XTX @4K, 4080 is 16% faster, while the 3080Ti is 33% faster than 6900XT.

In Warhammer Darktide, the 4090 is 70% faster than 7900XTX, 4080 is 10% faster, while the 3080Ti is 55% faster than 6900XT.

Does gamegpu actually test hardware? I thought it was one of those sites that just interpolate prior fps data.
 
No no of course, they do their testing, interpolation always fails when testing console ports and fails when testing RT, due to the unexpected nature of both, and GameGPU actually catches the unexpected trends of AMD cards excelling in certain titles and NV cards excelling in othes, their results are comparable to computerbase and pcgameshardware. They also separate their testing now, into RT cards and old non RT cards.
 
Is SER yet included in any benchmarks above? Or is it enabled on a per title basis?
 
No, it's not in any of the above ones, SER is only enabled in 3 titles so far: Witcher 3, Sackboy, Portal RTX and possibly Fortnite (UE5.1 NV branch supports SER for Lumen, no idea if the main branch supports it too or not). Cyberpunk is set to recieve SER support next month.
