Either the the 3dMark03/ShaderMark figures I have seen are horribly wrong, or the 12-pipe pro won't be able to top the NV40 but will lag about 15% behind. I think everyone expects the 16-pipe R420 to win, atleast until Nvidia goes through a clock-rev.

I'm actually hoping it (R420) will win. I've already made the decision (last year) that I'm not upgrading my system until BTX PCI-E mainboards become available. In which case, I will buy a PCI-E card. That means, I will be buying either the R423 or an NV4x with native PCI-E. I expect the NV40 with native PCI-E will be tweaked for higher yields and clocks too. If not, then hopefully a 500Mhz+ R420 will scare NVidia into action.
3dmark is an entirely different matter than actual game FPS.

That would be an extremely sneaky thing to do... omit PS2.0 because current NV boards have trouble with it, but support PS3.0 because ATi can't do that... I'd find that rather disgusting if I actually gave a rat's ass about UT2004.

I returned my copy after a certain Epic employee made some comments on here that didn't sit so well...along with ping hacks out the ying yang.

I am curious if UT2K4 will recieve the same treament as well? SM 3.0 mod for UT2K4, anyone?

well that would be financial suicide to alienate X% of the market to use P.S 1.4 only, and give one IHV an advanage that way... this makes no business sense.

In an interview with gaming magazine Polygon, Gabe Newell of Valve indicated that Half Life 2 might not make its 2004 release date.

Newell had the following to say:

"We've already spent millions into this project, and we're willing to spend as much as we need to make this the best first person experience ever. If that means delaying the game to 2005, we'll do it without any hesitation. If it means sinking another $20 million into the project, we can do it. Rest assured, if we delay the game, it'll be only to blow your socks off even more when it finally releases."

That doesn't sound that promising imo. And will of course add a bit more fuel to the fire to the code leak incident.

Judging by the number of ppl coming in here and making cryptic posts along the lines of "X800 Pro is going to beat 6800 Ultra fair and square in the majority of benchmarks" i have to say i can't wait to see ATi's next offering. Especially when these ppl are supposed to be in the know, although not directly but still they sound like they trust their sources (and i am not being sarcastic in any way ).

How's that? It was clearly stated it would be a technology mod. The way I'd figure, only cards that can support it would use it... hence the PS 1.1 vs. 2.0 we already are seeing now... right?

Like the WinXP only bonus pack made any business sense, especially since most of the servers run Linux...

That was the reference, but having both PS 2.0 and 3.0 would be the way to do, esp as it doesn't seem to be hard to have both implemented PS2.0 >>> PS 3.0 and obviously ATI will support 3.0 with new hardware, it's only that Nvidia was faster on feature front this time around.

well they are not gonna make less people buy the game just yet, just annoy server admins, but they as all fanatics will get along with lots of complaining and reinstall if needed. (of course if they have a copy of XP) :)

I would like to see no future Ati card faster than Nv conterpart, means no HL2 then? :devilish:

On topic, if the X800 pro is faster than the 6800U that would be stunning. But then why release the XT?

Does Gabe's, "we're willing to spend as much as we need to make this the best first person experience ever", sound eerily reminiscent of Romero talking about Dakatana's ever increasing budget and delay?

I'm not trying to insinuate anything, it's just kind of scary to me. :(
