And the .13 low part they did had a fraction of the transisters of the X800 and that part maxed out around the 600mhz mark with overclockers. I seriously doubt with 3 x the transisters they've be able to hit 600mhz. 500mhz is doable i think but 600mhz would have to be a refresh part with some serious tweaking of the process and speed binning, even then it would be very tough. Plus lets not forget that ATI is always a tad conservative when it comes to clocking their parts for yields and oem concerns, they're not as ruthless as nvidia are when it comes to clocks in the past.
But the 9600 was a brand new chip. ATI achieved some huge feats for a chip that didn't have an exceptionally long development time.
I have no doubt they have matured the process greatly, and will be able to do some amazing things.
