Radeon 9700 w/ DDR2 announced

I rather expected to see this just b4 comdex - Little bit of FUD to spoil the nv30 launch...

Can't see any particular reason in the timing here though. Any1?

Perhaps because there are rumors of some sort of announcement of a certain company on some futur chip tomorrow at Tokyo.... ;)

Its only FUD if it turns out to be false or months premature.

The reason is that Ati is going forward showing that they are in the leadership position. Not waiting to respond to Nvidia at Comdex but preceeding them by nearly a month.

Agreed.
Indeed, if they wait for the NV means they just follow them...

I wouldn't say that ATI are in a leadership position with DDR2 until they actually have a mass market, on-the-shelves, product to sell featuring it. Until they do that, all they have is a few nice engineering samples to demonstrate.

They haven't even announced a product yet, so it doesn't even equate to a paper launch.

I think there's no difference: announce something not existing... even it's a paperware product or just a future product...

On the other hand ATI said "...the first to demonstrate a visual processing unit (VPU) powered by second-generation double-data rate (DDR) dynamic random-access memory (DRAM), known as DDR-2."

Same ... . :)

You are really reaching here. Nv30 has not even been announced yet and Ati has publically shown on TV a working DDR-II R300. Now the initial announcements are being made.

So in your mind.. Nvidia is the leader At this point based on *rumors* of an unannounced product?

Strange.

No i think there is a BIG difference. One exsists and has been shown on national TV. The other is still just a piece of paper till Comdex.

So what is the difference between this and AMD 'announcing' their 2600+ and 2800+ CPU's, showing them off to the press and the product not being available over a month later?

Well, the biggest difference is that ATI are not announcing a product, they issued a press release announcing a technology. They have not annouce a marketable product utilising DDR2 yet. Sure, they have it working, sure they showed a board running on Tech TV, but they are not claiming saying that you can buy a solution featuring the technology yet.

If they'd annouced a Radeon 9700 Ultra DDR2 for release in a month then I would say you were absolutely correct. All that matters to me is what I can buy from the store.

Right now they are ahead 'on paper' which is exactly what people have been complaining about regarding Nvidia since the NV30 specs started 'leaking.'

Spiking NVs launch by presenting a NV30 'beater' and making punters reconsider (uncertainty/doubt!?) buying the Nv30 & waiting for 9700+.
I don't c why thats not FUD of sorts.

Perhaps everything as the 2800 looks like it may never see the light of day at retail and will be superceeded by a barton core 2800. If thats the case the '2800' previews really will seem a joke.

The 9700 core is DDR2 capable - so that launch is down to commercial timing and DDR2 supply - AMD has to convince ppl that they have a working process.

Regardless of whether or not ATI has been able to demo a video card with DDR2, it doesn't mean a damned thing until they release a card with DDR2.

Of course, it certainly shouldn't be up to ATI as to how quickly they can put out a card with DDR2...it's most likely up to the memory manufacturers. So, in that respect, this really doesn't mean anything as far as ATI is concerned. This is just another facet of the current position that ATI is enjoying with the Radeon 9700. Nothing new here...

...tree and the forest... :p

At least ATI has been able to show a working ANYTHING with DDR2 first and announce it later.

OK...

So nVidia has confirmed(?) DDR II on a card that they have not demoed or announced yet.

Ati demoing an actual card on television with DDR II is...what? Less substantial than what nVidia has done? Torpedoing nVidia who hasn't even announced a competing card yet? I don't get the thinking going on here.

How about it is ATi demoing DDR II on their shipping card technology, and indicating what they are capable of doing. This seems more a case of nVidia hurting themselves by lack of product than ATi hurting nVidia.

Excuse me?

I'm an ATI owner and am extremely pleased that (for once) ATI seem to be a nose ahead in both technology and mindshare. What I am not, however, is an ATI fanatic and get equally annoyed when people treat non-existant ATI products as the 'next best thing' as I do when I hear the same things being touted by Nvidia fanatics.

If that makes me a troll then so be it. Rather that than a zealot.

Well we dont expect to see a Nv30 protype prior to Nov, so why is it trolling to say this card could be out before the Nv30, and in doing so somwhat trumps Nvidia?

And, it doesn't have to be false or wrong to be FUD.

All it means is to spread Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt about a competitors product.
