quickie x800 question

Well, technically the XL has 490MHz DDR (980MHz effective), while the XT has 500MHz DDR (1GHz effective).

Look into an AIW X800XT if it's AGP you're after. The AIW card will be shorter because the XT chips are AGP-native (no bridge required), and rebates can bring the AIW's price to maybe $260 (under that of the AGP XL, last I checked). I'd also consider a 6800GT for AGP.

For PCIe, well, the XL is pretty fast and much cheaper, so it's the better buy.

16 pipes and 256-bit busses all around.

x800 XL is 0.11 micron.

Radeon X800 series (0.11 micrometre)

The Radeon X800 0.11 micrometre series were introduced at the end of 2004 along with ATi's new X850 cards. While the X800 is a great alternative to the X700XT, the X800XL is ATi's new competitor for nVidia's GeForce 6800 GT, delivering about the same performance at a much lower price.

X800

* Core Clock: 400 MHz
* Memory Clock: 700 MHz
* Pixel pipelines: 12
* Vertex Processors: 6
* Memory: 128 MiB on a 256 bit interface
* MSRP,(RRP): $249 US

X800 XL

* Core Clock: 400 MHz
* Memory Clock: 1000 MHz
* Pixel pipelines: 16
* Vertex Processors: 6
* Memory: 256 MiB on a 256 bit interface
* MSRP,(RRP): $299US(PCI-E), $349US(AGP)

mito, use the product comparison tool on ATI's site or just search for X800 XL at NewEgg and you'll find 490MHz DDR (980MHz effective). I'm not sure where you got that info from, but (and, granted, this is a minor point) the XL's memory is still ever-so-slightly slower than the XT's.

Again, if it's AGP you're after, NewEgg has the XFX 6800GT for $255AR, IIRC. Smarter buy than a similarly priced XL, IMO. If the AIW XT is still around $270AR, though, I'd be inclined to go for it simply because I'd use the AIW features. If you won't, then the GT's SM3 featureset would be the key selling point.
