So you can witness first hand what an abolsutely disappointing translation of Quake 3 it is.:p

I really loved Raven's Soldier of Fortune II multiplayer and thought they had some real genius there, but this is just trash. Single player SoF II was quite buggy, but Soldier of Fortune 1 was very good for both in its time. I dunno what has happened over there. Quake 4 looks and plays like that Star Trek Game in single player and the multiplayer is going back ot the stone age. It's bizarre, I thought Quake 4 would be real AI team play (beyond CoD), but it turns out the team is only there in between levels and "you go on ahead...we gotta stay here and...umm..think of something to do..." I was exepcting a bit more from the single player experience in terms of this and I definitely thought Raven would elevate the multiplayer experience when SoF II made for such an awesome team experience.

Xtremely short demo, but definetly very Quake II like, which is a good thing.
Too short to decide whether to buy the game or not however...

I don't think it's meant to be - more of a continuation of Q2. I always found it odd how a series with such a strong SP element went the way of Q3, and as at the time I was playing UT online it never appealed that much.
I also wouldn't consider Q4 a squad based game - I think they are added to give it more atmosphere, and give it that Aliens feel... which I think it does well.

I played through the demo. It was quite short, like mentioned before. First I was like "bleh" but it got little better. The surrounding "war" is a nice touch, without it the demo would have been crap. Not sure if the full game contains similiar episodes or are the first level the best part after which game goes into a Doom3-mode.

Framerate wasn't that high with my Athlon XP 2.5GHz, X800XT PE. I used 1024x768 and high details, even though it recommended medium details and 640x480(!!). It was still playable, but I suppose I have to upgrade my hardware in near future :(

I am talking about multiplayer. Take a look at it and tell me it isn't Quake 3. Allow yourself to think "this is how Quake 3 could have looked, had the developers opted for a slightly different design."

I think it was mostly about using a known name to get a MP focused game out. Quake 3 has nothing to do wth Quake 1 or 2, with the exception that some weapons. I know many people favored Unreal Tournament, but I think this is just because UT is slightly better in some ways and not that Quake 3 was bad.

I am still playing through it and it is pitiful how llow my desire is to hit the F9 key when I die. Different strokes for different folks.

Am I the only person who thought the SP in Quake II was pretty meh? I think I was still pining for the hordes of Doom.

Yup, the MP element is very like Q3 minus the bots. And yup, I've played Q4 online and wasnt overly impressed - I think Q3 is a better MP game (Q4 feels laggy in comparison). But I hugely enjoyed the SP element of the game, and that is what I bought it for :)

And vice versa, I never really liked Unreal tournament, quake 3 felt more "crisp" to me. I don't know what fresh vegetables have to do with a good game, but there you go :)

Why is this demo so hard to find? Why isn't it on the official site?

How "official" is this demo??

Looking at the Gamershell site it says that it is a beta demo, as someone pointed out earlier the MP component is not available/working yet. That's probably why its not widely available.

Well...

I just played the demo... Well... I'm glad I didn't spend a cent on this...

And while I liked SOF and Q3 MP, I don't see the point in buying this for MP only, even if I find it on a bargain bin. Why?

Look at this chart, I made a screencap:

It bombed, literally. There's more people playing BF on the friggin' PS2 than people playing Quake IV.

I'm glad I am not the only one in the Universe who didn't like this. It's a monstrosity. There is almost nothing Quake about it. I think it has more the look and feel of "we got an engine and made something with it" rather than "we had an idea and needed a new engine to bring it to life," much more so than Doom 3, which at least came across as cohesive, if not exactly what one would expect from Doom.

I'm glad I bought the Special Edition though, because this means I finally got The Reckoning expansion for Quake 2. Previously I have only played Ground Zero. I need to finish Quake 4 so I can put a mini-review up on these boards. I feel a very strong need to express my feelings about this game. What it could have been...what it should have been. "My dreams....shattered!!!" :p

BTW, those still waiting for their Quake fix might want to check out Quake 2 Evolved (requires Quake 2).

Well I think Q4 feels a LOT like Quake 2. A whole lot. Same sterile gameplay, similar enviros, same bad guys, same weapons, same stupid AI, etc. Quake 4 is also equally as mind-numbingly linear. So much so I can't imagine wasting my time playing thru the game. You get an autopiloted squad now though. Yay. And I did make pretty significant progress into the SP.

I don't and didn't like Quake 2 much, although I have tried to get into it as recently as a year ago, and several times before that over the years.

Seriously Quake 2 is the same game as games that came before it. It didn't reinvent/invent shit for SP. If there's anything redeeming about it, it's its MP which apparently SOME people REALLY liked. I dunno. I was into Doom and Doom2 MP, and then played Unreal MP. With a little bit of Duke3D thrown in, but not significantly. I skipped Q1 & Q2 entirely during their peak years. Quake 3 was somewhat of a phenomenon, but at my college we played Unreal and UT way more.

Personally IMO Quake 3 is the only reason most people know Quake exists. I have never personally run into a Quake 2 or Quake/QW fan, although I always hear on forums how great it was. Quake 3 was and is big for many. I think the Quake 2 love is nostalgia honestly.

I don't know. There still is active QuakeWorld-scene in Europe but, atleast in Finland, Q3 was born dead. Only Q3F gathered some players but most of them returned to QWTF. I haven't played QW for almost a year now but before that, for about 6 years, it was more like a hobby than a game. QW is just great.

It hasn't exactly bombed. The mod community hasn't even really started up yet.

I think the gameplay isn't quite up to Q3 standards online, but it could get there in the coming months.
