PSN weekly updates

What is Section 8 ?

A 32 player shooter on the PC, 360, and PS3 that allowed users to host their own dedicated servers, even for consoles. Both teams would try to take over specific areas, which would add points to your teams score. Respawns were handled by you dropping high above the battleground, allowing you to select specifically where you wanted to drop, along with your drop speed.

It was fun but lacked polish. Section 8 Prejudice is the sequel released as a digital only title. Much better game, and a steal for $15, which is a shame it hasn't caught on.

I was thinking of double dipping on the PS3, but if it's anything like what happened on the 360 version, the player base will shrink to only the dedicated rather quickly.

Fun game, probably the closest thing to Tribes on consoles yet, and it has some interesting twists on the large scale combat genre. However I don't think it has widespread mass appeal so the player base suffers because of this.

If you have a few friends who'll get it with you, then it might be worth it, otherwise I would just try the demo and see if it offers online play to see if people are playing it.

Is there a demo for it ? I didn't see any! I sure want to try it out. Seems to be a good MP game for a small price. Unfortunately there's no way to know how many people are buying it or playing it. I don't have real friends, you see, I have a ps3  !

@kagemaru: How's the SP? Even if I don't find full games in MP, I am getting two games here, my gut feeling says really good shooters. Will the SP hold up for that money? Does it have co-op? I would love some co-op over MP any day !

EDIT: Pretty positive Gamespot Review:

WoW ! Even has a Horde mode ! I think I have lost my money here ! Oops! My super tight budget just lost $15 ! I hope my would be wife never comes to know about this ;) ! I am supposed to be saving right now :( !

Bought it ! But missed out on the free original Section8 offer. Only the first 1000 customers were to get the first game for free. Didn't know that.

Anyways, hope it turns out to be good ! :)
Now that I have spent the money, time to spend the orher most imp commodity now: Time itself. I have a feeling that I won't be able to spend more than an hour or two with the game !

Guys, do you know PS+ has "Plants vs Zombies" for free ? I found out yesterday from some guy in the chatroom.

Download it if you haven't done so. The gameplay is the same, albeit control is inferior to the touch devices.
Still a great and free game !

My wife survived 44 - 46 levels in the endless challenge. I don't want to think about it.

Supposedly both RE4 and RE Code Veronica HD will be at half price for PS+ members, at least for the first week or so. That's kinda awesome. (first time I actually think I'm getting something worthwhile for my 40€ investment since the service isn't really working as advertized)

Yeah, if they want to give PS+ discount, they should do it the first week(s). Otherwise, I would wait to see if PS+ will discount the game later anyway.

Does the service actually work for you? The system is supposed to upload my save data to the cloud storage between 5 am and 6 am every day (or every other day, can't quite remember). It's also supposed to check for game updates and then download and install them automatically. Unfortunately it doesn't do any of these things. I still have to do everything manually. This seems to be a very wide-spread problem as well.

Yap ! You have to toggle the PSN Date/Time setting once to trigger the service. (Set time manually <-> Set time via Internet). I did it accidentally and read about it online. After that, my PS3 will report what it has sync'ed last night when I turn it on the next day.

I don't know what their QA is doing. Perhaps their regular passes always perform the Date/Time settings first before the Sync service. ^_^

According to forumites, Firmware 3.72 fixed the problem.

But I came here originally to post about Element Monsters. A few folks in the XMB chatroom got addicted to it. Supposed to be this $0.99 PSN game with collectible (virtual) cards.

One of them claimed that the AI is ruthless like Eye of Judgment, which I adored. Has someone here tried it yet ?

Nope, but I bought RE4 today. Loving it.
I don't really get all the bickering about this particular HD update. It's a perfectly well executed version of RE4 running at a higher resolution. I think most of the art held up rather well too. The game still looks quite striking with its lovely character models, detailed scenery (nice trees) expressive facial animations and very neat effects. (there's some good looking fire in there, even by today's standards). There's also absolutely nothing missing in terms of effects and lighting from the Cube and Wii versions.
It's certainly heads and shoulders above the Prince of Persia HD Trilogy, which is simply a buggy mess.
A little AA would have been nice, but it's a fairly low contrast game, so it's not exactly a huge deal. Hey, it's not like Sony did an awful lot with the first two God of War games besides blowing up the resolution. At least RE 4 doesn't have problems with low res pre-rendered cinematics, because just like in RE5, there hardly aren't any to begin with.

Apparently, Sony organized an indie arcade in Austin earlier this week:

As Austin’s Fantastic Fest kicked off last night, PlayStation hosted an indie arcade filled with games coming exclusively to PSN. You might be familiar with most of the titles on display, as we’ve talked quite a bit on the Blog about Journey, Retro/Grade, and Okabu. As the developers were setting up their stations, I was immediately drawn to a title that we only just introduced you to: Closure.

Okabu:

Just played the demo of Gattling Gears, and man the game looks awesome and is fun to play too :) ! I never knew this game and my my how beautiful it looks: Steampunk style FTW !

For PS+ members, Elemental Monster card game is free this week. From people in the chatroom, the card game is addictive and fun. Grab it before it's gone. ;-)

Found a nice tech demo video of PSN-exclusive survival horror title "Amy". Besides looking like one of the big boys, the game actually has a really intriguing concept as well. It is being directed by the guy who made Flashback back in ye olden days. According to Gamespot it had a great showing at E3 too. It was originally scheduled for June 30th 2011, but sadly it just got pushed back to an unspecified date sometimes this fall.
Anyways, I love horror games, and this actually looks like it could turn out to be a proper horror game for a change. You know, once that's actually unsettling for a change. Not just gross.

So for full games, especially from third parties, PSN was lagging a bit versus Games on Demand, but now things are starting to take off it seems. I bought Battlefield 3 the other day myself. One thing struck me however:

Sadly, you can't download the full Modern Warfare 3 PS3 game. You can, however, download Call of Duty: Black Ops, providing you have £47.99 and 14GB hard-drive space spare.

Black Ops is 14GB?
