PSN weekly updates

First stereoscopic 3D game coming to PSN in June:
http://www.siliconera.com/2010/05/30/first-3dtv-playstation-3-content-coming-to-psn-next-week/

Pain, the human catapulting game on PlayStation Network, is going stereoscopic 3D. Sony has a Pain pack that adds 3DTV support and two challenges created specifically for 3DTVs.

Alien Toss 3D is one of the new challenges in the Pain 3D pack and has players fling a stereotypical Martian. Ice Breaker 3D, the other 3D addition, lets players shoot crates at an ice castle.

PSN crosses 5 million accounts in Japan:
http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/05/31/home_crosses_five_million/

"Let's celebrate 5 million PSN Accounts in Japan!"

Okay!

Sony also shared a few stats for the PlayStation Store. Currently, PLayStation Store sees 1 million unique accesses every week. Total domestic download content has has topped the 110 million mark.

As a show of appreciation for reaching the five million account figure, Sony will be holding a present campaign for the general public, PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Home users.

Lucky draw and other promo activities planned between June 3 and 30 in Japan. Details in the link.

PSN ... tell me about it.

I live in France and I have a Japanese 60Go playstation3 (the best ever), I bought it there when I was living in Tokyo.
Of course I have a French PSN account, and until recently an Americain one.

Everything was fine, I could swap from one account to another and could buy in one what I coulnd't find in the other one.
But 2 weeks ago, they blocked my (international) credit card on the américan store.
I tried to reach Sony's claim department and they gave me no explanation, just "a PSN can only work with a credit card from the same country" ... WTF !!!

I would curious to know what is there excuse for such a stupid control policy ...

So now here is my situation ... I have a Japanese console but don't speak Japanese, so I order my BR games from american websites to be sure to play them on my PS3 (because they were stupid enough to make the system with a NTSC/PAL difference ... ain't that stupid now that every tv can handle both) ... and now I can't even buy games extensions ... that I'm willing to pay for, even if it cost me some outrageous bank fee for changing € to $ and vice and versa.

So Sony's answer is like giving me the finger and telling me to buy a slim version with no retro compatibility, less AV output connexions, less USB entry ports, no card reader (I use this a lot for my photos)

I was a Sony fan boy, but that incredibly stupid behaviour is making me want to quit playing on console (or just second hand ones so they can't get any of my money ... and the day they will sell games only through internet, I will definitly just play games on PC).

Honestly why is it so difficult to have just one big international PSN were we could by games from anywhere (I wanted japanese games too but that is impossible for the same lame reason).
Leave the choice to the customer damn it.

I believe it's related to local/regional licenses and rights. Sony is on the hook to honor these regional contracts (best effort) to avoid stepping on the content owners' and other distributors' toes. Very often, a company may own rights to multiple regions, and they can use one popular region to pressurize the distribution company (like PSN) to enforce their rights in other regions.

This is just my guess without insider info though.

It's great to have one entity for all regions, infrastructure-wise.

OTOH, the international content rights may be more time consuming and expensive to negotiate than local ones (because multiple parties may be involved if the rights have been given out beforehand). So it's case by case.

Any suggestions over which PSN game should I buy ? (I'm kinda leaning towards a choice between Fury add on for wipeout, PixelJunk shooter and Lead & gold)

I liked Fury a lot and played it more than Shooter. Don't know what Lead & Gold is ... some shooter expansion?

One answer is buying PSN Cards that are paired to US Store.

What was the last PSN titles you bought ? I am trying to see what you may have missed.

Good point. I noticed Critter Crunch the other day being practically free for instance. There's some nice offers going round.

Also, the 3D gaming thing seems to be coming to PSN soon, in the form of a 3D version of Pain, apparently.

I got Shooter and love it although I think Shifty thinks it's too short ?
The fluid dynamic gameplay is refreshing !

I also haven't ventured into PSN games since Critter Crunch and PJ Shooter (free DLCs aside). My next purchases will be Catan and MAG DLC.

Is Joe Danger any good ?
http://www.destructoid.com/i-double-dog-dare-you-not-to-have-fun-with-joe-danger-175151.phtml

I noticed a few articles on it for the past week.

Everything about it screams "you will play this with a smile on your face, and you will like it, damn it." From the bright, Pixar-like design of its thrill-seeking protagonist to the loop-de-loops and fake shark tanks, it's hard hard not to love what Hello Games is selling. Even the damned theme music, a happy, jazzy tune that will get caught in your head for hours and have you shuffling your feet, will make you grin. And that's before you even you press start on the DualShock 3.

What a surprise, Söldner X-2 is actually good.
The first game was probably one of, if not the worst shmup I ever got my hands on. That game was broken in so many places I got the feeling that the developers merely heard about the premier Japanese shmups thanks to the intenet, but never actually got to see let alone play them.
The second game is so different I'm wondering why the developers didn't go with a new name entirely. It's also a mighty fine looking game (stylistically it's still more Katakis than R-Type, but very pleasing on the eyes regardless), with big lavishly animated sprites and gorgeous 3d-backgrounds (which I'm assuming are movies) in crisp 1080p. At 1.5 GB it's a rather meaty download and €13 may seem a little steep, but the game is rather lengthy and gives you tons of reasons to come back again and again. It's also very obvious that a lot of effort went into the game's creation.
It's not quite Gradius V or Radiant Silvergun yet, but it's getting there. If you are at least a little bit interested in good old side scrolling shooters, Söldner X-2 is definitely worth a purchase. The game's adaptive difficulty setting also makes sure that the game can be enjoyed by gamers of pretty much every skill level.

This one hops onto my radar easily:
http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/07/hoard-dragons-meet-dual-stick-shooting-on-psn/

The top-down, 2.5D game will have players controlling dragons as they attempt to rack up a high score by destroying crops, stealing livestock, kidnapping princesses ... you know, the usual dragon-y shenanigans.

Its developer notes that the game takes place in "a living kingdom that grows around you," and will support two-player co-op both online and off. No release date yet, but the game will be playable at E3 next week.

I was hoping for a game like this when they announced Lair 3-4 years ago:
http://forum.beyond3d.com/showpost.php?p=826553&postcount=101

How do you play/control this thing ? Is it a FPS or RPG or Flight sim or what ?
Can I like pee and drown incoming knights and horses, take dump on castles and BBQ fishes in the ocean ?

If they make the players anonymous, allow PvP (like Demon's Souls), I can be as obnoxious as I ever want to.

I watched a little girl play Cooking Mama last Saturday. I wouldn't mind playing Cooking Dragon in this game also. [*chop* *chop* *chop*] Seriously.

Baiting young, handsome princes + kings + knights with upside down princesses should work in the game too.

EDIT:

The PS Blog has more info:
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/06/07/hoard-ps3-and-psp-dragon-combat-hits-psn-this-september/

HOARD is an arcade-action game where the dragon is the hero. Your goal: collect as much treasure as possible from a living kingdom that grows around you. Burn down crops, strafe merchant wagons, and — best of all — kidnap fair maidens and force the kingdom to ransom them back for piles of gold! But watch out for vile knights and merciless wizards, who want nothing more than to gain fame by slaying a dragon.

I do tend to like lots the PSN offerings, that Joe Danger looks fun as does this...however I'd be inclined to wait for them to be a special offer first, the main problem for me is that it's 'dead money' and altho I enjoy the games they usually end up short-lived - calling all cars, lemmings and rub a dub, there's a fair few quid on a wasted couple of hours.

How much money do you get back from a cinema ticket after a fair few quid on a couple of wasted hours?

TBH I don't go to the cinema often, that's why I have a large HDTV and BR player ;)

I know what you're saying, but it's just like a mental block with not having physical media...and don't be too harsh on me, I've spent £100s on PSN so it's not like I never buy anything - in fact I think I must have 15+ PSN titles and over 100singstar/rockback (etc), I'm just being a bit more 'careful' after getting my fingers burnt...if I like the demo then I'm more likely to just get it.
