PSN added digital reservation/preorder option: ^_^

(The first example will be The Devil's Playhouse)

Telltale Games officially announced Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse for PlayStation 3. Episodes start rolling out on April 15, but you can “reserve” the game starting this Thursday.

Why would you want to pre-order a digitally distributed game? Buy Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse before it launches and you save $5. The game costs $29.99 until the first episode goes live. Afterwards, it will be $34.99.

Here's a novel idea - a progressive price kinda like some sort of Bid TV thing, where the earlier you put your money down, the cheaper you get the game. With the first announcement and PR spiel, you charge £2.50, generating revenue from those who are game to try anything, while those less sure wait and see. You release trailers and PR gumpf, educating the masses to how great your game is, and more and more will want to get in early, but you start pushing up the price. This encourages those on the fence to pony up early and get a saving, instead of dithering about and perhaps missing out on a bargain.

PixelJunk Racers to race with gamers' ghosts like Demon's Souls:
http://kotaku.com/5497677/pixeljunk-expansion-channels-demons-souls-of-all-things

The spring update to the first PixelJunk game, PixelJunk Racers, will add the ability for players to summon and race against the ghost of any player on their PlayStation friends list or anywhere on the game's leaderboard.

How?

Dylan Cuthbert, chief of PixelJunk studio Q-Games, told Kotaku at a recent live showcase of the add-on that PixelJunk Racers: 2nd Lap takes advantage of a PlayStation 3 "user data" service. The technology, he said, popped up on his radar last year. His team wanted to use it in one of their games. The user data service can pull player data from anyone playing a PS3 game programmed to support it. The other game that Cuthbert said uses it is the sword-and-sorcery role-playing game Demon's Souls, which records of all of its players' characters. Ghostly renditions of those deaths are then uploaded to other players who will see them as they play Demon's Souls. Walk up to a bloodstain in the game and press a button - you'll see the how a player died from that spot. You'll even see ghosts of other players successful playing the game.

Starting May, PSN Weekly update happens on Tuesday in US, Wednesday in EU:

Both the American and European PlayStation Store updates are moving to new days, starting in May.

Tuesdays become the new day for PSN updates in North America, as recently explained by Pulse's Christina Lee (pictured, above). In Europe, content will be updated on Wednesday, as explained by SCEE's Mike Kebby.

I don't really see the point in a set day. I would rather they do what SCEI does, and just update the store as they add content. Use the ticker and the PSN newsletter to announce when new content is released (leaving the players who ignore those 2 mediums to discovery content on their own). I would be interested to know if there is some data out there to indicate how each method effects sales, traffic, and the user experience.

Yeah. Portioning out the DLC over the entire week would also potentially let them release more stuff every week, where a giant release on X-day would look overwhelming to some users and cause some stuff to get buried underneath a proverbial avalanche of other junk.

I think having a set day is ideal. I know what day I can always go and look for new content. I don't have to check the store daily to see if something I want was added.

Makes sense to move it to the same day as 360 as well.

If it was added irregularly, you could just as easily check it at the same time every week, to see what content has been added over the past week. Say, Friday, for example.

Personally I like a fixed day as well. That doesn't necessarily mean it has to be just one day though.

Anyone tried the new Zen Pinball table yet? I bought it but not yet gotten round to it ...

I submitted the "on-demand PSN update" idea to the Playstation idea sharing website. Let's see if it gets approved. If it does, we will see how people like their digital content to be served. There is probably a study somewhere already though.

Short interview with Telltale:
http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/16/interview-telltales-dan-connors-talks-sam-and-max-episodic-subs/

This is the first time that a game has been available for pre-order on PlayStation Network. How did you guys go about implementing that with Sony?

They were ready for it. They had a couple of things that they were talking about that were very similar. So, I think, it's the direction that they were pushing in and when we came in and said, "Hey, we're willing to try this and do this with you guys," they were open to it as a way to actually make it happen. So, the timing was great for both parties. I think, we're a good chunk of content for them to try this on and they've been working on the infrastructure to support it. So, it's a lot of teamwork. They're right down in Foster City so they're close to us and we were able to work together and iron through the different details of making it happen.

...

With the advent of digital distribution, episodic gaming was expected to be a pretty big trend in the industry. At this point we've seen far more failures than successes and Telltale is sort of the lone shining beacon of episodic success. What other trends in the industry do you think would be a good place for Telltale to invest in?

Well I think the way we're looking at the world right now is how can we create a product that works across multiple touch points for players. So how can you build something that has a core experience at Telltale that you come and get every month but that you can interact with in the other parts of your web life, I guess for lack of a better term. Can there be an element of it on your phone? Can there be an element of it on Facebook? A multiplatform approach to an entertainment experience so that you're engaged with us and you can take a piece of it with you on the bus, do a little bit of work, come back, plug it into the game space and have it advance the game that you have on your hard drive. That to us I think is the most exciting thing and we're very interested in continuing to build out elements of the experience that can live outside of the traditional idea of a single product.

Another small title that caught my attention (I have weird taste !):
http://www.siliconera.com/2010/04/21/hysteria-project-a-horror-laserdisc-style-game-for-psp-and-ps3/

Thailand based Sanuk Games has an interesting PlayStation Mini game coming out tomorrow called Hysteria Project. Similar to Night Trap, Hysteria Project is entirely filmed. You pay attention to the surroundings, make decisions, and watch what happens. Think of it as choose your own adventure on a PSP or PlayStation 3.

...

Will try it out. Curious to see a South East Asian creator's take on gaming. :)

EDIT: The last time I was in Thailand (This was decades ago), I got called up the stage of a pr0n magic show.

Media Go v1.4 Now Available:
http://www.siliconera.com/2010/04/26/media-go-v1-4-now-available/

Sony have gotten around to releasing Media Go version 1.4, which PSP users will want to grab, as it lets you download content off PlayStation Network without requiring your PSP to be connected to the PC. You can also now queue up multiple downloads at the same time.

The Changelog also mentions new TV shows and other content being added to the library of media available for download.

I bought PoP Classic from the PS Store. It said it could output 1080p but that is wrong (max output is 720p) so I wrote Sony and demanded my money back. I'll let you know what happens.

Fans of quirky, Japanese developed indie games who own a PlayStation 3 are in luck. Sony Online Entertainment are teaming up with Rockin' Android to localize and release a bunch of doujin games for North America, with 3 already due out next month. The downloadable games will have PSN Trophy support and PSP remote play capabilities.

Official press release is in the link.

Sony announced Win a Trip to E3 2010” Contest:
http://us.playstation.com/psn/events/e3videocontest.html

For the “Win a Trip to E3 2010” contest, we want you to create an “open letter” video to Kevin Butler—everyone’s favorite PlayStation® VP in the “Dear PlayStation” commercials. Make sure it’s funny, creative and original. A couple of things you want to include:

* Each video should begin with the phrase “Dear PlayStation”

* Include your take on Kevin Butler’s ever-changing title

* Make sure you include your own name and title (e.g., John Smith, Desperate Fan)

* Keep your submissions brief and to the point (30 seconds or less)

* Videos can be about anything PlayStation related

* All content must be original—no copyrighted music, video, pictures, etc.

* Don’t film Kevin’s response

Three lucky winners will receive airfare to Los Angeles, entry to E3 (June 15, 16, 17), three nights hotel accomodations and per diem.

Gamers will be able to download Settlers of Catan via the PlayStation Network starting June 15, the game’s official site said Wednesday.

...

Catan will cost $6.50 and support two- to four-player online games.

...

The PlayStation version Catan was developed by Game Republic, the Japanese developer responsible for games like Genji and Folklore.

But don’t hold that against them. The videogame developer has a little known sideline in board game design. A handful of its tabletop offerings, such as Owner’s Choice and Shadow Hunters, have been localized for American gamers by Z-Man Games.

Besides Catan, I am also waiting for Carcasonne. :)
