PS3 will require adaptor for PS1&2 saves.

Q: How do I save my PlayStation 2 memory card information to PlayStation 3?
A: To use saved data on a PlayStation 2 memory card, you must copy the data onto a virtual memory card within the hard disk. This requires a PS2/PSone memory card adaptor to copy the data to your PlayStation 3. A memory card adaptor is designed to edit, up/download game saves to and from EMS flash card or smart media card."
This seems to be just to transfer over your old saves but I don't get the big deal.

That is the big deal. Considering some big titles, like FFXII will be coming out shortly before the PS3, those PS2/PS3 owners who don't want to have to keep their PS2 hooked up, have to start over, or wait (for their PS3) to play will have the ability to transfer saved games without worry. Before this announcement, there were was no definitive way to do it.

I thought the 60GB model was supposed to have a memory card/sd/media reader.

Memory Stick/SD/Compact Flash slot.

An adaptor? TEH SHOCKING! You mean a machine with no old memory card port would require one? Who'd'a'thunk?!! :p

Glad to see they're talking about transferring the data to the HD for operation there, though. (And, I assume, the ability to create and save to these "virtual memory cards" new, if need be?) I'm rather sick of swapping their memory cards to begin with, so if they kept ON with that... :devilish:

There's been no possible way for them to NOT require an adaptor, short of your owning a PS2 to function as one instead. (And even then, you'd either need the network adaptor or purchase a USB memory stick that can function as a "backup drive" to transfer it over.)

And basically, that's just using a very BIG adaptor. :p You just might already own one.

This would have been nice for the Xbox 360. Maybe Microsoft will do one now?

BTW, Sony doesn't say if this is a first or third party adapter do they?

Well, seeing as how it will be something that likely any PS1 or PS2 owner (who also buys a PS3, of course) would want to have kicking around, I see no reason they wouldn't want to draw as much personal profit from it as possible. ^_^

I assume there will be 1st and 3rd, but I would expect 1st part to be available at launch, and others to follow somewhat behind.

Dunno, some people might be satisfied if they get their transfer done once (likely even trying to borrow one for that), so I doubt this would spark much revenue in the future.

On the other hand if the Adapter would allow using ALL PS1/PS2 Peripherials including the Dualshock it would have alot more value (PS3-Games with Rumble!!), even more if it would work with PCs too. I had to order my current Adapter from Asia and still using it, no PC-Gamepad comes close.

A USB to Controller/MC port adapter would be excellent, that's a great idea. However, even if that is released, there would still likely be no rumble in PS3 games. Not only does the controller need to support rumble, but there has to be a support library available to developers so that rumble can be implemented in the games as well. The patent infringement, if I'm not mistaken, covers the controller, and its utilization in games. I would be extremely surprised if PS3 games shipped with rumble support for that reason.

Well, everyone might just use it the once, but everyone's gotta USE it. ;)

Can always pass it around your friends, though.

Technically such an adaptor should be practically free. I can't imagine Sony charging more than $20 dollars for one. (although I could imagine MS charging $40 for a similar item). Sony could make a profit at $15 or even $10 too. At that kind of a price point an adaptor's a lot simpler than requiring a networked PS2 and special software.

Looking at this from a security perspective I hope that they are testing, testing, testing this thing because once you allow people to start transferring game saves, it is only a matter of time before they start trying to do other things with it, especially circumvention.

Not really sure what you mean. You can transfer/trade psp game saves already. I'm sure they will let you do the same with ps3 saves.

Oh, it'd be cheap, sure. It would just likely cost $2 in parts at most. ;) Cheap enough and everyone would just toss one in without thinking, but MUCH cheaper to manufacture and guarantee Sony wants to make that a 1st party device.

I assume he doesn't mean "trade saved games on the same platform" which, certainly, has been going on since the original Playstation, but more "putting code masquerading as PS1/PS2 saved games in the hopes of bypassing system security and letting you reprogram things as you want."

Though I wonder how the PS3 would be on that right in general, what with their desires to have a "fully armed and operational" Linux on there. ;) It seems "hacking the PS3" would be trivial at best.

thank god!!!!!!!

I'm just glad there will be an adaptor for it :)
I don't want to start from level 1 again when i play disgaea...
i already maxxed out laharl, etna, flonne, and a few divine majins (including maxxing out their transmigrations) to start from scratch :!:
