[PS3] Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time

Resistance. has been selling strongly even before the bundle

No doubt, it was the number #1 selling ps3 title for quite a while, a claim R&C cannot make. Resistance is a quality title no doubt but a lot of its legs are due to bundling and the initial dearth of titles on the PS3. Low initial ps3 sales (and a tiny install base) contributed to Resistance's initial low numbers.

I'm not trying to suggest that R&C won't have any legs, or won't move any more units, but launch titles performance is really hard to compare with other titles. It probably would have taken near a 50% attach rate for resistance to chart in december 06. R&C could have made top ten last month with ~6%. I could see this if there had been a number of sought after titles in competition, but it seems roughly 75% of ps3 owners chose to buy no game at all in October.

Say that to Resistance.
Resistance started with momentum. It was popular, has a great online component, and people are still willing to buy into it. RnC hasn't had that beginning, so would need a change of heart from shoppers.

Ratchet games are usually slow burners anyway. However, people need to keep in mind that the game was released early, and during the time covered by the sales charts, hadn't been advertised at all. It's only 2 weeks of sales data in October NPD's - so hopefully come next month it will have much more respectable numbers.

i think sales will actually pickup for the holiday season. its a great game for kids (and adults) and its one of the few good E rated games so i think a lot of parents will buy it. and if all else fails, its the perfect game to bundle with the PS3 for next year.

Ratched is a type of game that really needs a large userbase to move units. It's a high quality game and has the potential to sell well, but it doesn't have such a mainstream appeal that it would sell massive amounts at this time. It will probably end up quite well in the worldwide market at the end of the day though.

actually, i think it does have a mainstream/casual gamer appeal, but thats the problem with the PS3... it hasn't really appealed to many casual gamers yet, so the casual gamer userbase is relatively small... most PS3 owners are "hardcore gamers". but that does add on to a point you made, it needs a larger user base for it to sell well. i think the reason why it sold well on PS2 was because the user base was so big... and why was the user base so big? because the PS2 was very appealing to everyone. thats another reason why i think the sales of R&C will pickup, the new 399 sku paired with the 80GB pricedrop will appeal to more casual gamers.

Two weeks was plenty of time (most games have near half of their sales in the first month). Typically games trend downward significantly after release. It's the rare game that will pick up momentum.

It has some pretty neat reflections going on in this level, on the wall on the left. It's not clear in this picture, but when you're walking on it with the gravity boots and rotate the camera it looks reallly cool.

but the 399 sku was released early november, so oct sales wouldn't reflect the impact of the new 399 sku. also, with the holiday season coming up, i think sales will pickup, or at least they won't fall very much because it is a great game for kids and its the perfect game for parents to buy for them.

the largest market for gamers is the casual market, and again, the PS3 hasn't really appealed to many casual gamers yet with its relatively high price point. and again, R&C is the type of game that appeals mostly to casual gamers. so once the PS3's user base grows, i think more and more people will buy it. i'm not necessarily saying it will have legs and sales will constantly grow, but i think sales will stay consistent unlike some other PS3 titles that sell decently well at launch but drop dramatically after.

You have data for 8-9 days of sales in the US (7 of those a "soft" launch before the marketing for the Oct 30 launch kicked in), and a single-day - Sunday at that - of sales in Japan.

We have since seen a new lower-priced hardware sku release in the US.

From the horses mouth.

Still haven't got around to playing it. Sadly COD 4 turned up on the same day and now Assassins Creed's arrived. Doh! Can't wait though.

Both are excellent games in different ways. Given the exceptional quality (I actually think in some ways it's a better game than Resistance), Sony will feel safe marketing it and gamers should love it. One of the main things they need to do is to find ways to sustain the buzz longer.

With Playstation Home coming, there will be ways to sustain such "grass root" efforts (Top 10 recommended games by gamers, "Ratchet & Clank" day where everyone wear the Ratchet costume, or even a patch to R&C to include PS Home elements). It would be similar to Resistance in the sense that it deserves and get a second chance in the limelight.

In addition, given its rating, R&C is also a great title for bundling with PS3 or another game -- just like how Sony bundled Resistance.

FWIW, I saw 2 TV ads for RnC today. It's also nice to see games (not just this, but also AC) advertised with 'real game footage' labels at the bottom of the screen. Original next-gen games were being sold on CGI visuals.

I just finished the first space flight sequence and it was pretty fun, a bit difficult though as I normally use invert and I quess you can't change the controls in the space sequences. Overall I'm liking the game although I can't believe how easy it is, which doesn't really bother me, but I certainly noticed it.

Even cause it looks stunning and it really doesn't need any 'extra help'..

It gets more challenging once you're midway through the game - I guess it also depends how you play the game. All in all, it's a light challenging but could be a bit more difficult. Still, amazingly good fun and I'm already looking forward to replaying it a 2nd time on a more challenging setting!

I remember R&C3 being quite a bit harder though...

my biggest complaint with the game is that you can't invert the controls during the space sequences... i still managed to get all the skill points/gold bots on those missions though. is there anyway i can contact insomniac about this? if they ever release a patch, i'm sure it wouldn't be hard to add this.

I find the space sequence the toughest, followed by the teleporting enemies later in the game (
... until I tried the magnetic net or the gas that confuses the enemies on them
).
I was also struggling towards the end because I was really really sleepy, but my hands didn't want to let go.

I don't know why. I s*ck at space battle.

I beat R&C over the weekend and started playing through the challenge mode. I've always enjoyed the challenge mode in these games, so I'm making good headway, but I've also got to stop and play Uncharted some time...
