PS3 hardware failure

The hair Dryer technique did not work :( ! It did not switch on after the whole process. Should I try again? Is it just a trial n error thing?
Isn't there any way to deactivate accounts from the PC ? I heard about doing it from tye Qriocity website but if I go to tye qriocity website, it just says not available in ur region. It doesn't give ma any option to log in.

Heatgun definitely. And find a good instruction / youtube for how to do it.

I think for old games you already own, it's still 5. Since the recent firmware update, all users are now limited to 2 activations.

you have to use a heatgun - and check out the gilksy youtube guide it's really good:

http://www.google.co.uk/#sclient=ps...on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&fp=440660d03c957758

just be REALLY careful and don't be afraid to heat it - at the end of the day you'll be no worse off...but the more heat the better chance of fixing (and lasting longer) - first repair lasted 20 mins because I was too scared to damage the thing!

also be sure to leave the board for ages after doing it - it needs to cool down fully.

I repaired 3 now, enough to do the data xfer - unregister and clean it up/factory reset before sticking on eBay for spares

How long will it last , generally speaking, if I get it repaired from an electrician? The repair is very cheap, like $15. The only problem is that if I get it repaired now, I am afraid Sony might not take it back for 50% off on a new ps3 , when this one dies again, as its seal will be broken. The technician over at Sony centre says it doesn't matter if the seal is broken, they can take it back, but these guys usually have little knowledge about Sony schemes.
Has anyone here given back a repaired/opened ps3 to get a new one for a discount ?

wow, this is really bad - I suppose it's good for people to save their data and get a deal from Sony. but it also means any 2nd hand units could have been fixed YLOD :|

regarding the repair length - it varies, I think the 2nd attempt lasted a couple of days and my 3rd attempt lasted a few weeks.

Hmmm...so nothingmuch there except that I will be able to deactivate my system and maybe copy saves. But the risk of Sonynot taking it back :( ! Not worth it.

I could de activate my US and EU accounts from here:
https://account.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/pc/login.action

but when I try signing in with my Indian accounts, it says the service isnot available in ur country :( ! I have lotsa stuff bought from my 3 indian accounts :( !

I'd call Sony and confirm about the seal, the point is - how important are game saves & accounts/trophies etc?

Tried that link. Tried to deactivate my old PS3s (which aren't named or dated, so there's no way of knowing which is which!) and it says PS3's can only be deactivated via the PS3 system. So it's currently not a goer, although I guess it looks like even when that's made available it might not be available for India. Great.

deactivate all and reactivate the consoles as you switch them on!?

You have to go to the media and devices section and deactivate all. It won't ask you to do it from ur PS3 if you through that section. Its available for US and UK, as I could de-activate my US and UK(primary one I use for gaming and friends as Indian accounts were not allowed when I got a ps3). Its not yet avaialble for INdian accounts which where I bought all stuff from PSN, and those are the ones that need de-activation. SO, I am kinda stuck.

ALso, people say that calling SOny for de-activation is like going through hell and even if you convince them to deactivate, they will de-activate only one account. I have three with multiple purchases :( ! I will give a try tomorrow, as today is Sunday.
Also, there is total confusion over the "50% off on a new ps3" scheme too as some people say that I might get only 30% off as my ps3 is more than 3 years old  ! Why would Sony punish old customers?

Because with each year the product devalues and gets nearer 'normal' life expectancy.

Much like selling a console, you'd get more for a newer machine and as a buyer you'd be prepared to pay less for an older machine.

Yes, but Sony is noy buying a console from me, basically they are getting free spare parts for repairs and still selling one more console to me. its Win Win for them.

But what value are the spare parts on a machine that is more than 3 years old? Generally speaking, the errors that most earler PS3 users get are the ones that have affected you and therefore your 'spares' aren't of much value. Additionally, the elements they might find a use for are now 3 or 4 years old, meaning if they used them in the repair of another consile there's a good chance that repair wouldn't last long.

However, it's possible in a Slim there is more for them to take advantage of.

I'd say even a 30% discount on a new machine is a decent offer (though obviously not as good as 50%)

Don't forget, you are heavily invested in a console (games, dlc, media, peripherals, etc) that means most users would anyway be willing to pay full price for a new machine to access all of that paid content. I still have PS3 games, controllers, microphones and a Move starter kit for a PS3 I no longer have. However, I know I am at some point going to purchase one again so I can continue to get full value from all of that stuff. Indeed, the only reason I haven't is I'm still pissed with Sony for charging me to repair my PS3 only for it to die again with the same error a few months later and find out that they only warranty repairs for 3 months.

Which, now I think about it, is something to check as well. Does that discounted PS3 come with a full warranty (12 months) or a limited 1 or 3 month warranty?

Did yours suffer from YLOD too? or some other issue?

The reason I am pissed at SOny is that they don't repair ps3s at all in India, so I don't even have a choice of getting it repaired  ! And add to that its basically a manufacturing defect, something they should be repairing for free. On top of that, The guys at Sony Centre are unsure whether the discount will be valid for me if I get it repaired from somewhere else. They say it won't be an issue as my ps3 is already out of warranty, but thensome say SOny won't touch an opened ps3.

So,I am at their mercy whether they charge me full amount or offer me some discount as they plainly refuse to repair any ps3.

Add to that, even if i do get a new ps3, getting my accounts reset is supposedly the biggest pain in the aftermath of a dead PS3 , or thats what I have heard from people who have tried to get their accounts reset.
and ..........Add to that Sony only deactivates one account for you, that is if they ever agree to do it in the first place. I have three accounts shared between me n my cousin, on which we have bought multiple games this christmas. The two activation limit means I am stuck even if I get a new one as both activations will already be over. :???:
EDIT: BTW< one gets full 1 year warranty with the new ps3, as it counts as a new purchase.
