September 29, 2006 - Sony has taken another major step on its path towards releasing the PlayStation 3, with the Akiba Keizan Shimbun newspaper reporting today that at least one major Tokyo retailer has taken delivery of the first PlayStation 3 demo kiosk. At this rate, the system may actually make it out on schedule!

Accoridng to the paper, the multi-story Yodobashi Camera outlet in Tokyo's Akihabara district now has an actual PlayStation 3 unit on display. A monitor above the system shows trailers for games like Afrika, Genji, Heavenly Sword and The Eye of Judgment.

The system is strictly hands-off at this point, but the newspaper reports that customers were stopping to take a look before heading to the register to purchase Pokemon Diamond & Pearl for the DS.

For a picture of the first retail PlayStation 3 unit, check out the Akiba Keizai Shimbun website.

My god! Behold the power of PS3 for stopping pokemon maniacs for few seconds!

And then something someone made (NOT TOO GOOD PHOTOSHOP SKILLS) but it still is kinda funny.

In Ken K's voice:

"Ah that was a good day for the PS3 (w/Blu-Ray & Cell). I was there. The fans stood there amazed for awhile that I made an apperance."

Well the SPE stdio lot had 4 of those kiosks today (closed to the public), along with a couple of PS3s in glass boxes hooked up a Bravia and a 70" SXRD playing Blu-Ray movies. Interestingly the little "PLAY B3YOND" (which is SOOOO better than "This is Living") pamphlet they had amusingly mentioned Cell still having 8 SPEs...

*awaits joke about the pedistal being the actual unit*

Good stuff though, Anxiously awaiting a hands on here in the states.

but the good folk from Sony popped into the office with a fully working PS3! Don't believe us? Then check this out...

You can even see the reflection of Motorstorm in the shiny exterior. Good, eh? Finally Rich, Andy, Dave the workie and I got to grips with the lush PS3 for the first time. First impressions? The pads lighter than we anticipated and we were pleasantly surprised by the top-notch feel when controlling the vehicles with the pads motion rather than the sticks. We also got to grips with Resistance: Fall of Man too. The jury's still out on this one but it looks amazing; like proper next-gen. But it really drew in a crowd of curious gamers. Including some teary-eyed men from an Xbox magazine...

How much do those TVs cost? Are they 1080p? I can imagine these demo kiosks costing a few bucks...

I'm 99,9% sure these are 1080P TV's. IMO these booths look really good! I can't wait to test PS3 when these arrive here. :) (Probably gona take awhile though) :(

I think its this 40" BRAVIA - $ 3,799.99 (link)

I believe that is the smallest 1080p screen Sony makes.

The ones in the kiosk are 1080p as you can see from the yellow sticker in the corner (it's Sony's Full HD 1080 branding).

They look exactly the same as the kiosks used at TGS btw. They probably took all those kiosks they made for TGS and dispersed them to various stores around Japan.

It's the same panel that Sony's been using since E3 (although the ones at E3 were Japanese models since the 1080p Bravias weren't released in the US at that time yet). Too bad they didn't hook up a PS3 to the prototype xvYCC 82" Bravia yesterday though, that would've been nice to see.

A little offtopic but, what was he talking about in the bolded part?

Some people don't feel it can differentiate itself enough from other fps games especially WW2 games like COD etc.

For hardcore FPS fans it's basically already a done deal. But the jury is still out on whether or not casual gamers will be interested.

if ressistance managed to do for ps3 what cod2 was for 360, then sony is on a solid success!

bad thing is, I listened to the latest 1upyours podcast, and even if that shane dude was home alone there,
he said that resistance according to him is an 8/10. (!!!!)
now this, this has got me reeeaaally worried.. :???:

I'm amused they found the pads lighter than expected... I mean they're the same pads since E3 (which everybody already commented felt lighter (no motors inside anymore)), so how much lighter would they expect them to get?

I'm wondering if they were on a different build of Motorstorm too... I tried it yesterday and it was quite buggy and locked up a couple of times. Supposedly Resistence is supposed to use the motion control feature a bit as well.

Probably these people hat had this opinion werent at E3, or the pads were connected to the stand on controller holders thus didnt get the chance to feel the weight

hey guys, I heard that this huge supercomputer stand has only 4 ps3 empty shells and hidden inside are vcrs streaming video over the huge screens.

yeah, I know it makes sense, but when I first looked at that picture I was too impressed to think about that.

sony=marketing kings (one more time)

I guess nobody needs to try to figure out how break those cases... :D
