PS3 Audio Problem - 2 channel sound

Trying to help my brother with his PS3. He's sure that his games are dropping sounds. For instance, in Oblivian depending on where he's standing sounds disappear, or voices become extremely quiet. The big seller on me was when he loaded FIFA08 and the EA logo came up and it never said, "EA Sports ... It's in the game."

I've had my computer set to output 5.1 when I only had stereo speakers before, and the effect was pretty much the same. You lose sounds that are supposed to be coming through the center channel, and the volume on the other channels drops drastically as you move around.

We looked through the sound settings, which are very basic. He chose the AV/Multi option, and it doesn't let you choose any sound formats. Is it possible the PS3 is using one of those Dolby Pro Logic formats, somehow?

If you have any ideas, we'd really like to know.

If it were, as it should, you wouldn't be missing sounds. Pro Logic encoding methods take multichannel audio and compress it into a standard stereo signal, while it seems your brother's PS3 is not doing that but rather simple outputting the left and right channels of surround sound tracks directly while excluding the rest. I've no clue why the PS3 would do that though, perhaps restoring the default settings will fix it.

I hesitated to respond in this thread because I don't quite understand the setup. How is the PS3 connected to the speakers (besides the default AV cable) ?

Goes from the RCA output on the default AV cable to an RCA switch (switch between Gamecube, PS2, PS3) to his stereo receiver. The receiver is a basic 2 channel stereo receiver.

Anyone have FIFA08 to confirm it should say, "EA Sports ... It's in the game," when the logo flashes?

Yer definitely restore the defaults, doing that for me fixed my bluray playback from skipping (I was playing around with the settings :) )
