ps2 tech demos

Does anyone know where I can download the old ps2 tech demo videos. I lost them some time ago in a hard drive failure and I can't find them available for download anywhere.

Dunno if it's much help, but they were linked sometime back in a thread in the gametrailers forum... if you do a search you might be able to find them still. No promises, but best i can do for you...

Which ones? you mean the duck and all those?

The best tech demo on PS2 - or any platform - was the Find My Own Way demo that came with PAL PS2s. Mindblowing. And the only one you could actually see in realtime and interact with.

i have many more on my harddrive not from IGN...

get ready for the shock!....

....the deal is, memory is a funny thing... i could swear the PS2 techdemos looked AWSOME, CGI "look-like" graphics yada yada bla bla bla, back in 1999.
But 5 months ago i saw them again.... jesus, they were delivered alright! many games look better... and some games look Alot better.

i listened to smart-asses so much that i started to belive my self the EE was over-hyped and the techdemos were un-reachable. My bad, because they weren't...

my advise, never listen and believe without searching for facts (videos in this case)

After seeing that, what do you think of Sony's E3 showing now. ;)

Yeah no kidding. I wonder if the internet was then what it is now; what people would have said about those tech demos. Would they have said they were unreachable like today? If Sony does the same graphical leap past their tech demos as they did with the PS2 then I'll be a happy camper.

uh... it wasn't that long ago....... ;)
Ask your grandpa if you will, he'll tell you the exciting and tragic stories of CW1, about the brave men fighting for PS2 and xbox with their 56Kbps modems and 128Kbps ISDN's.

Well there's still people saying that early PS2 tech demos have never been equalled in games, when it would take nothing to pick up a lot of games out today to shut them up.

But this has nothing to do with PS3 demos.

It doesn't now, but the samething could happen with the PS3. Hopefully.

lets not mistake PS3 techdemos with the Game trailers of the same E3 conference... in 1999 they did not show trailers, just techdemos and some of them were playable (GT2000).

The Tekken PS2 demo can be considered a game trailer, it was not playable but showed virtually similar cut/introductory scenes that were later in Tekken TAG, a PS2 launch game.
I think also the Bouncer was just a trailer, not playable.

That's why I was looking for these videos. I had seen so many people saying that sony promised too much with the demos they showed. Now seeing them again I really don't think that was the case.

The only remaining thing that stands out in my mind was the early screenshots of the getaway. I don't think the game ended up looking nearly as good, but other, more impressive games did.

One that's one of 100.33 million people that think Sony didn't live you to there promise that has been revealed the truth. I glad you see the true now.

Just go pick up Ridge Racer V, it's only about $5.00 now.
A fully rendered real-time version of Namco Girl is in the intro.
She looks really nice on my Wega, although a bit jagged.
You can't really interact with her, but you can turn on and off a few effects like motion blur.

Even to this day it is still impressive, especially when you notice her hair.
I wish Namco would have remade Ridge Racer V, I'd love to see Namco Girl on PS2 with even more polys and some nice FSAA this time. I know they can do it, MotoGP 4 proves they can.

Has the PS2 lived up to its tech demos?

Arguable.

Has the PS2 delivered on its original hype?

Certainly not.

thats more opinion than anything.

yes. (took a year or so after launch, but it did)

Above and beyond, ps2 delivered on everything i hoped it would before it launched, and some.

In the strictest technical terms, yes, you could say the PS2 has exceeded the original tech demos. But, when you consider the way the demos were presented and reported on it all becomes a bit fudgy. Image quality problems (that plague PS2 titles still today) were glossed over and only acknowledged much later, only to be denied by the PS2 early adopters. There was much said/promised regarding the capabilities of the machine, but sadly, not much evidence of any of it -even 5 years later.

Another factor to consider is that people, in general, are not very good judges of technical performance and are often 'impressed' with cheap effects and lack the ability to appreciate true technical acheivement.

Above and beyond, ps2 delivered on everything i hoped it would before it launched, and some.

Irrelevant personal anecdote.

Cheap tricks or not, the titles of today look tons better than those ps2 demos. But sometimes thats what devs must do, to find little "walkarounds" and other ways to doing things on strange hardware to make the games more efficient, and in the end look better.

We are talking about hype, so ofcourse its going to be a personal opinion on weather it lived up to it or not. Irrelevant, no. But the numbers show that the hype wasnt all BS, as the ps2 still sells well 5 years later, all things considered.
