Power Render X has been renamed to the Prototype Engine.
PR-X started as an experiment with per pixel lighting using the standard Power Render Engine. (X stood for eXperiment). Now that PRX has evolved into a full blown new engine we need a better name
People tend to think that PR-X is a newer version of PR, but it's a competely different API and feature set, with new file formats and art pipeline.
'Prototype' is appropriate because the new rendering engine represents a dramatic shift in the way 3D objects are lit in the world. The engine will serve as the framework for many new projects in the future and will probably be the way 90% of games will be lit a decade from now.
There are some plans to create a sample game to test the engine, and it will be called Prototype X. A new formal website for the engine is being designed to replace the old developer one (www.powerrender.com/prx).
In other news, the GUI code is coming along and Desktop and Window classes are being developed. This will let you have simple icons and windows in the game, and be able to layer graphics together easily. In addition to regular game menus and HUDs, this lets us build a unique developer interface. For example you could have a developer desktop containing icons for special effects or other internal engine variables that can be controlled with sliders or checkboxes, a console window, script editor window and so on.
