I have noticed that without any AF/AA the nv40 appears to be cpu limited pretty much all the time, that's why i predict we'll only see the speed differences between X800Xt and 6800 ultra in extreme resolution and AA/AF situations. Even then it will probably be close too.
All the time ? Are you sure about that ? Try running Far Cry at around 2048x1536, and tell me nv40 is bottlenecked by a CPU.

Obviously, higher the resolution, the more stress is done to GPU, memory, and bandwidths of those connecting parts. And bottlenscks more likely to happen in GPU (graphic card) part rather than CPU unlike lower resolution around 640x480, 800x600, and perhaps 1024*768 - Again this depends on engines/games.

So IMO, saying todays GPUs (graphic cards) are CPU bottlenecked *without* stataing particular games/engines, resolutions (and options such as AA, AF, texture quality etc) is very misleading.

Bottlenecks in different parts of a system can happen depending on different settings. and different games/engines.

Well, Ultimately this will all come out in the wash tomorrow.

But I expect the X800pro to even beat the Nv40ultra in the Conditions you gave above. The X800XT should be another level above that.

Does "expect" mean

1) You know this for sure through whatever means?
2) You've made an educated guess based on some inside info?
3) You've made an uneducated guess based on the hype/rumour mill?
4) You hope/wish/want/dream that it's true because you love ATI dearly?

Just trying to figure out what people are really trying to say when they throw out these little comments :)

It's getting pretty much impossible to figure out who actually "knows" anything when everybody is making statements using words like "expect" and "will" (which imply an opinion based on some element of fact) instead of "maybe", "think", "hope" etc (more speculative)

By now you should understand Hellbinder pretty well. All of his claims have a grounding in reality, but all of them should come with a packet of salt :)

At the very least this keeps you pleasantly surprised in the event ATI *does* pull off everything HB says they do.

You've gotta admit HB, you were a little too optimistic about the 9800Pro back then :)

Sounds like Deja-vu... :p
Sorry, I'm getting excited. I'm really, really, REALLY hyped about the R420 and I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised tomorrow by the thing surpassing my already pretty-damned-high expectations for it. 8)

Well, that and I'm a bit giddy because:

1. It's Monday (<--Monday=Dig's Friday night)
2. I got my tractor going
3. My daughter is actually freaking taking a nap for me! :D

The above three things have got me a bit giddy, please forgive.

I'm still not convinced that Nv40's Ps2.0 speed it fast enough let alone its Ps3.0 abliities.

You would have thought that if PS3.0 was such a big deal that they would have gone out of their way to showcase it.

I have to admit that seeing Ps1.x pics shown as Ps2.0 and Ps2.0 as Ps3.0 doesn't exactly instill confidence either

Have you seen this on digit-life moose :-

http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/gffx/nv40-part1-c.html

Very impressive link on NV40 there.. if correct it really puts some issues to rest!

Looks like a bug in the 6800 drivers was preventing higher Far Cry performance.

20 fps in 1600x1200

http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=751&s=1

20 fps would account for Hellbinders short lived optimism.

All these "bugs" would count for doing 90% less work to gain 20% performance:
Known 61.11 driver bugs said:
117597 [TWIMTBP]NV40,WinXP: Corruption when trying to take a screenshot with AA enabeld in Far Cry.

117561 [TWIMTBP]NV38/40,WinXP: Corruption of some weapons in Far Cry.

117474 [TWIMTBP]NV40,WinXP: Fog broke in Far Cry.

113476 NV38/40-WinXP: Lighting/shadow problem in FarCry.

117575 [TWIMTBP] NV40/38: Banding visible from wall in FarCry.

How do you calculate your 90% figure?

Looks purely scientific to me, where do you see the problem?

Seriously tho if it's not rendering the fog... it's usually a big framerate killer. When the reviews go up I have to remember to check if THG noticed any of these issues while running the leaked drivers.
