PowerVR5 to be unveiled within the next month?

Yes, reeeally. ATi will be almost the only company not to support SM3.0 with upcoming chips.

Pray tell me then, who else is coming out with SM3.0 silicon this year, huh?

Look at the thread title. Its not hard to figure out who he's talking about...

See, the whole Series5 announcement itself is nothing but rumour as of now and here he comes, asking if anybody knows about SM3.0 support. Nobody even mentioned that before him, yet we're supposed to treat it as a fact? Puh-leeze...

Nobody in this thread perhaps. But people have been saying Series 5 is 3.0 compliant for a while. I've personally had that info for quite some time, so that part is not rumour as far as I'm concerned. I agree its a bit pemature for him to assume that Series 5 will be released this year of course. As this is only a rumour ATM, all be it a strong one.

I just thought you genuinly didn't know who he was talking about :)

If it does, where will that leave ATi and the R42x series?

I'd say that when the featureset gets revealed, I'd be rather asking the second question for another IHV. ;)

Why? If both nVidia and PVR support SM3.0, but ATi doesn't, guess who the odd man out is...

That's your perspective; I have something entirely different in mind. Of course am I not going to elaborate on it.

Are you suggesting that ATi's offering will also have virtual texturing ?

You've got it all mixed up.
SM2.0 is more like PS1.1 because it represents a baseline, a lowest common denominator for DX9 cards, if you wish.
It's actually SM3.0 that's sort-of an inbetween standard - more than PS2.0, but nowhere near SM4.

Oh, I skipped this beauty :
I believe the same will happen with Sm3.0 thanks to X-Box2 support and lots of pc hardware support

Reeeally?
Yes, reeeally. ATi will be almost the only company not to support SM3.0 with upcoming chips.

Xbox2 suport, huh? Now, that's really interesting considering that a) Xbox 2 graphics hardware is being lisences FROM ATi and, b) XBox 2 will be SM4.0. Yup, the Xbox 2 will make SM 3.0 lots of polular and ATi won't have hardware capable of it....

Where did I mention ATI and/or virtual texturing? And what's so special about virtual texturing anyway..... 8)

Radar1200gs have to throw mud at ATI again in a topic not related to ATI in anyway? Why am i not surprised

As much as i'd like to see a PowerVR5 going final and retail to consumers i'm wondering how long has the rumour been going that it's been in dev? 2 years seems to be a standard dev time now unless you got loads of resources to spare :/
And if the card is a TBDR as some people hope (which i don't really understand the benefit of), doesn't that mean that the card should be able to match the NV40 / R420 with say 80% of their specs considering if they got the tech that is.

You didn't mention ATi and virtual texturing. I was just looking for an interesting way in which Nvidia could be the odd man out.

Reading between your lines is an inexact science(or perhaps its an art) but it seemed a reasonable guess.

I don't like surprises *snicker*

Last time I asked JohnH here how long it's been under development, it seems to be as long as the competition too more or less. I think (not being sure) that it doesn't have to do anything with what ST licensed in the past.

pmac,

What do you like about Monica Bellucci most?

Ailuros, Monica Belluci has the most gorgeous curved surfaces of any women alive. Thinking about her gets me processing in a most primitive way.

I suppose Nvidia simply can't handle Monica's curves and that's why they are the odd man out. I always had my suspicions about them.

I heard for the Power VR5 series the tech demo is going to be a fat hairy guy with a beer gut and flies flying around him because the card is so awesome that they don't need any sexy chick to entice customer. But hey its just rumour :p
