There are rumours going around that the GPU will get an unveiling soon, very soon

Does anybody know for sure?

Judging by your username I should be asking YOU that question

would be nice to see PowerVR Series 5 GPUs soon.

would be the very first desktop, arcade (NAOMI 3) and perhaps future console(?) full graphics processor with on-board geometry processing / T&L / VS from the PowerVR camp to get released.

Do we know who sega choose to produce the actual chip? Nec? Tsmc?

What I want to know is, will it support SM3.0 or not?

If it does, where will that leave ATi and the R42x series?

Probably in the hands of tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of gamers, maybe?

I'd say that when the featureset gets revealed, I'd be rather asking the second question for another IHV. ;)

Why? If both nVidia and PVR support SM3.0, but ATi doesn't, guess who the odd man out is...

That's your perspective; I have something entirely different in mind. Of course am I not going to elaborate on it.

I was joking before but i really hope this is true .

I'm getting ready to buy a new video card and i was going to go with the r420. But if power vr comes out with a series 5 around the speed or the r420 my money is going there.

I just hope it comes out and we hear about it before i spend 500$ on another card

Well, here is another angle on my perspective for you.

Developers generally don't bother with in-between standards, they pretty much head straight for the finish line.

SM 2.0 is an in-between standard - it's somewhere on the way to SM3.0

PS1.1 suceeded because of X-Box and all the pc hardware capable of utilizing it, PS 1.4 was pretty much ignored.

I believe the same will happen with Sm3.0 thanks to X-Box2 support and lots of pc hardware support.

You've got it all mixed up.
SM2.0 is more like PS1.1 because it represents a baseline, a lowest common denominator for DX9 cards, if you wish.
It's actually SM3.0 that's sort-of an inbetween standard - more than PS2.0, but nowhere near SM4.

Oh, I skipped this beauty :

Reeeally?

That kind of BS has gotten old already and I have neither any interest to get involved in another similar conversation (like I ever did heh...), nor has it anything to do with what I was thinking of.

Yes, reeeally. ATi will be almost the only company not to support SM3.0 with upcoming chips.

And NVidia will be "almost the only" company to support SM3.0 for the better part of this year.

not to mention most of the nvidia cards sold this year will be barely able to do p.s 2.0 as i doubt the nv30 will jsut vanish with the release of the nv40

Well if there is an unveiling of the PowerVR SEries 5 tech then this is great news no matter what form it comes in. If it's a PC card then at least it shows the IMG are still around and work on silicon. I would assume it supports SM3.0 as new demos on the PowerVR website are 3.0 right?
