Elpida president Yukio Sakamoto told Reuters that Sony plans to use 512MB XDR DRAM, with Rambus' interface technology, in the PS3.
I guess we don't have to worry about ps3 having 256 megs of memory anymore.

I think that should be 512mb ram, which would equal 256 MB when you add up all the chips, as stated by another thread.

Only 512MB ?!!!! It's too little! You won't be able to do anything with only 512MB?!!! I want 1GB!!!!
;)

J/K. But I wouldn't be surprised to see people whining like this.

I just hope that it's not some typo or mistranslation, and that he actually said 512Mbit XDR RAM, which we knew already.

qwerty2000:
, this article has been misinturpreted. it is not saying PS3 will have 512 MB memory. it is saying PS3 will use 512 megabit memory modules. 512 megabit = 64 MB. the PS3 would need eight 512 megabit memory modules to have 512 MB RAM. but that is unlikely. everything seen on the web so far indicates PS3 will have 4 memory modules of either 256 megabits or 512 megabits. so that's either 128 MB RAM or 256 MB RAM.

hell I would love it if PS3 had sixteen 512 megabit memory modules giving it a full 1 GB RAM.

128 MB <---- total suckage
256 MB <---- not good
512 MB <---- decent. just par for the course
1024 MB aka 1 GB <---- would be nice

:?

^^agreed 100%

I have faith in Sony...once the developers start complaining, I expect 512 MB of XDR in PS3...no need to bring back the PS2 fiasco again...

Ps2 Fiasco? Yeah Sony must be going "Damn guys, ps2 was such a fiasco for us, we won't do the same mistakes all over again!!!" :|

WTF are you thinking!?! 1GB of RAM would be nice!? Shit 1GB is paultry! You can't even to squat with that.. Talk about total suckage! You'd need at least 8GB of RAM to do anything remotely decent to take advantage of a nextgen box... I mean c'mon here, you gotta start thinking bigger! Why constrain yourself to a measly 32-bit address range? :?
