They also love animals.
I personally thought there were interesting opposite bits of news as well. For instance, in the Netherlands, unemployment has gone down yet again even in 2008, reaching an all-time record low. Of course it's expected to go up from now on, but still, it has quite a way to go to even reach more average numbers. The U.K. hasn't been doing as well for a while I think - maybe we'll see another negotiation about introducing the Euro.
(unofficially businesses seem to have embraced the euro a fair bit already - I could pay in Euros almost anywhere last time I was over there)
