Our's was at June 6. Well, it's rather called the national day, and I don't even know what we're celebrating really. :)

This may sound stupid, but wasn't Sweden always sovereign?

Nothing stupid about it - why should you know anything about the history of a small nation? ;)

For a period of time in the middle ages all the Scandinavian kingdoms were united as one realm (the Kalmar Union). As this eventually fell apart a number of wars in the following several hundred years tried to recreate that union (the Danes were the most aggressive about that).

The Swedish National Day (not our independance day Humus) celebrates the coronation of the Swedish king that (among other things) ended all attempts to recreate the Kalmar union, Gustav Vasa.

Ahh, thanks for the heads up. Here in Canada (Ontario), we learn a great deal of other nation's history, but not all. IE: Canada (duh), America, England, France, Germany (~Bismark/Unification era, not just Hitler heh), Russia, and ofcourse the ancient stuff.

About I know about Sweden is Ikea, some famous QW clans, and Covenant ;)

I did call it the "national day", didn't I? It's the closest counterpart to what is called the independence day in other countries. The idea is the same, go out in the streets, praise your nation and wave your flag, except nobody bothers in Sweden.

I don't think I'll have an independence day to celebrate for some time - the Australian Republican Movement isn't doing too well. :(

How about the day the Brits let the Aussie criminals out of their jail cells?  j/k! Sorry, couldn't resist

Sad isn't it? I still stand by saying that referendum was rigged :)

Happy independance day India!
