I only know the second and third game of this franchise and I liked them at that time. If I'm not mistaken, Onimusha 2 was one ofthe first games I have played with a big cinematic production where the characters were in focus. When older games are considered I can only think of Final Fantasy VII and MGS1 which were older and also cinematic at times. In the 1990s there also were many real film sequences like in Disruptor, Warhawk and Wing Commander III, IV. Then there were games that used both. For example Resident Evil had a real film sequence at the beginning and later rather short ingame sequences. This also applies to Dino Crisis.
In my opinion Capcom should not do as much with Devil May Cry but rather something with Dino Crisis and Onimusha.
