On the future possibility of Opt-in user consented Kinect data gathering rewards program for advertisers/tv networks/gamesdevelopers etc

Here me out this is not an attack on Xbox one, and you'll find out why after you read my post.

What do you think of the potential of Microsoft using Kinect to gather data for advertisers or to create a system to compete with Nielsen Rating System. All on a voluntary opt-in/out basis for console owners. They could entice console owners regularly with a variety of rewards, to remain "opt-in"

Marketing VP Yusef Mehdi HINTED in a national advertising conference earlier this year Xbox Kinect has the technology to be put to use for advertiser data gathering. (anyone with half a brain knows that Xbox has the technical capability to in theory)) He later emailed the ad/news agency that published his quote at the conference and said they misinterpreted what he said at the conference. I beleive that could possibly be backpedalling and delaying/(potentially scrapping/ putting on the backburner) a program because of the media and elements of the tech/gaming community creating another PR debacle for Xbox, when they still needed to heal the anger caused by some of the earlier Xbox policies. MS needs to let things cool down & get the console established before testing the waters.
Nielsen made +$5 billion last year gathering tv viewing data. They do not gather feedback for game developers so that is an untapped market. Furthermore beyond self filled surveys, testgroups and other traditional means, Nielsen has no system to gather emotional data to monitor facial reactions to tv/movie scenes, hear laughter at a particular scene or monitor heart rate to determine if a movie is scary. Advertisers cannot tell if their advertisement is capturing the users attention.

With the hdmi passthrough on Xbox one travelling through the south bridge chip and the apu it likely allows MS the technical ability to analyse data travelling through the hdmi in.
At least for a small segment of the developed wrolds population (XO owners who opt-in) MS could also use the Kinect to gather user data for advertisers in the internet, in a way google never could.

Users who participate get repeatedly notified when and what the kinect is gathering. User data is scrubbed/anonymized.

Obviously MS would not implement something like this without user consent, but if they offered a rewards program to get people to participate what do you think of this possibility?
It could be a win-win for MS and consumers and even games developers who could do with some more accurate feedback on their games. 58% of users show disappointment at a games short ending. Consumers who don't want to participate don't have to but those who do could get rewards. Additionally Microsoft could use this additional revenue stream to acquire more exclusives and/or sell Xbox a loss or get those investors off Xbox division's back.

Fine idea, though the sample being limited to opt in XB1 owners is obviously the limiting factor. Less representative than traditional Neilsen for TV demographics, though as you mention data could be gathered for many markets outside Neilsen and in a much more intimate and detailed way within the Neilsen market.

Rewards would actually have to be substantial though. Neilsen pays IIRC $25 or so to record viewing for a short period. If the opt in was for a year, you might be talking about something like a free live gold subscription. Plenty of members would go for that. The question is if you could get companies to pony up for that data.
