Nvidia will do whatever they believe will make them the most money. But I don't think any attempt at a "killing blow" makes much sense. Nvidia has already "won", and the majority of people still buying AMD probably won't be influenced by whatever Nvidia does. Of course this doesn't mean Vega/AMD can't be competitive, but competitive doesn't shift marketshare overnight. Vega would have to be dramatically better than whatever Nvidia is offering to achieve significant short-term change, and that is just not going to happen....I wonder if NV will try to go for a killing blow by releasing early.

You forgot to mention that efficiency went to the roof. in fact, Nvidia claims that Volta SM is 50% more efficient than Pascal one, a clear indication that Volta SM is not a tweaked update but a totally new design. Only with this advantage, Nvidia will keep a large lead in power efficiency vs Vega, thus in performance too, even if it implies a bigger dieSince the "killing blow" would have to be dealt by gaming oriented chips, another question worth pondering is: How much do Volta's changes net for Geforce-/Radeon-type of applications (i.e. games). From what I've seen with GV100, there is no real improvement in transistor density nor in clock speeds from the "new"(ly labelled) process tech.
