NVidia now a permanent member of the ARB

Seriously, it was about bloody time! And good to see that they got aboard by unanimous vote too. :)

Maybe a sign that nVidia is now fully committed to work on the ARB standards?

Well, aside from the PR-related "stuff" (i.e., as far as "real 3D technology work"), I have the impression that they've been putting significant effort into "Open" OpenGL advancement since the first half of the year. This doesn't seem so surprising from that perspective.

Why hasn't this happened until now?

NV was like the FIRST consumer 3D accelerator company to implement full OGL support (as opposed to a minidriver etc), weren't they?

Weird.

Nvidia not getting on till now is likely more political than anything and I figure it's for the best. At this point in time I think Nvidia is all about getting back on the horse, part of that is likely sticking with standards rather than all those proprietary extentions that caused numerous problems in the past.

Humm I'm almost sure that my old Graphics Blaster Exxtreme featuring a 3DLabs Permedia2 (wow those were the days ;)) had a full OpenGL support. Given that Permedia 2 is their only chip which was not dedicated to the professional market.

I'm not so sure, as both my permedia2 cards never did run quake correctly. If I remember, it had something to do with how the chips handled transparency.

The board did play Motoracer pretty well though. (And then Motocross Madness spoiled my impression of how physics should work in motocross games, and I hated Motoracer 2.)

ATI a permanent member correct?
See http://www.ati.com/companyinfo/press/2002/4454.html .

Just for completeness....

3Dlabs, ATI, E&S, and Intel are the current permanent members not mentioned in the NVIDIA press release.

Auxilliary members are Dell, Matrox and Sun.

In addition to SGI, the other current founding members of the ARB are IBM, HP (HP<-Compaq<-DEC), and Intel.

Personally....

I think this is great news, and great for OpenGL.

omfg DELL is on the ARB??? I can just imagine the ARB meetings:

[someone not dell] "Okay, onto problem XYZ."
[Dell] "Are the cables plugged in properly?"
[snd] "Yes...."
[Dell] "Could you repeat the problem please?"
[snd] (repeats the problem)
[Dell] "Are the cables plugged in properly?"
[snd] "I thought we already covered this."
[Dell] "Please make sure the cables are plugged in properly."
[snd] "What do you mean!? What do cables have to do with this!?"
[Dell] "I can't do anything more until you make sure the cables are plugged in properly"
[snd] "Okay, okay, the cables are plugged in properly (whatever the hell that means) now may we procede!?"
[Dell] "Okay, I want you to reinstall Windows"
[snd] "WHAT!? What the hell are you talking about!?"
[Dell] "Look, I want you to reinstall Windows. That will fix it."
[snd] "What the hell? I'm not going to reinstall Windows..."
[Dell] "You must reinstall Windows, if you won't do that then there's nothing I can do" <gets up and walks out>
[snd] "Let's not invite those guys again..."
[everyone else] (general agreement)

Well, if NV will be putting some of their PR & management guys in those meetings to celebrate they're permanent now, I'm sure we'll get worse ;)

Now why are you dudes ruining a perfectly fine day by taking potshots at me? I take this personally... I am Dell's representative to the OpenGL ARB and I started our engagement over two years ago. And btw in a previous life I developed OpenGL while working for one of the permanent ARB members. ;)

If one looks you'll see that Dell is involved in all areas of graphics (e.g. ever wonder who chairs the PCI-SIG PCI Express Graphics Workgroup?).

Anyway you can consider this my de-lurking post and I'd be happy to answer any questions that I can concerning Dell and graphics.

PS - problem XYZ is out of warranty. Please buy a new computer. ;)
