NVIDIA No 3?

Dunno what faith you put in the Mercury number, but here you go...

http://biz.yahoo.com/rc/040127/tech_nvidia_2.html

Data released Monday night by Mercury Research showed Nvidia slipping to third in the graphics market with 24.7 percent share, just behind rival ATI Technologies Inc. (Toronto:ATY.TO - News), which rose to 24.9 percent.

Intel Corp. (NasdaqNM:INTC - News) remained the leader at 31.7 percent of the market, with its integrated graphics chipsets, despite losing 3.2 percentage points of market share.

Goldman Sachs noted that Nvidia lost share in the key market for stand-alone graphics parts for PCs, while ATI posted gains in that segment. Nvidia once held a performance lead over ATI in that market, though the two companies have drawn essentially even in the eyes of analysts over the last year.

"As a reminder, our thesis remains that (ATI) will eventually equal (Nvidia's) share on the desktop thanks to the roughly equivalent performance of its products and its newly forged relationships with a number of key add-in board partners such as Asustek and Microstar," Goldman analyst Andrew Root said in a note.

While Root did not change his Nvidia estimates, he said the data pointed to concerns for the company.

"We do however think there is additional downside risk to Nvidia estimates for (the fiscal first quarter and fiscal second quarter) given the unexpected gap in share gains in notebooks," he said. Nvidia lost less than one percentage point of share in the December quarter, though Root said he had been expecting the company to make gains instead.

Derek Perez probably clipped this out, framed it, and hung it over his desk. He'll want to submit it at annual performance evaluation time.

ATi will obviously be thrilled, from where they were quite down a couple of years ago, to a point where both nVidia and Intel are losing market share to them. Coupled with them joining the Nasdaq 100, it's been a rather nice month for ATi.

Break out the bagels.

I remember a lot of NV fan boys saying, well its been 6 months after the 9700pro shipped but ATI still has not gained any market share...blah blah blah... This shows you it takes time and more than just one product to do that. Hats off to ATI for a strong performance!

ROFLMFAO~~~~

Good one. My first thought was, "In a two horse race in the graphics world, nVidia is now holding a strong third place...".

Most of the info seems rather consistant...

It actually makes some sense.. I mean:

ATI has the best video cards (at the current moment)
ATI has the best notebook video cards (best performance/power/availablity)
Intel has the best number of integrated video chipsets (even if it does suck)

NVidia's probably taking note of this...

It will be interesting to see if nVIDIA and ATI team up in the integrated market and take Intel on. At this point, nVIDIA doesn't have the resources to go head to head with Intel.

I don't think the numbers are a huge surprise given the relative performance of nVIDIA and ATI. Next couple quarters will be very interesting, especially if the nV4X cores are solid.

The numbers show exactly what people who knew at least a little about the industry said back when the 9700 was new and the GFFX was no where to be seen... and that was give ATI a year or so in the top seat and we would start to see really noticable market share shifts. We wouldn't see the changes happen in the first quarter or 2 quarters, we'd see it happen over a period of a year or more.

It will indeed be interesting to see what this upcoming generation brings... I'm quite looking forward to it. :)

Does ATI even need Nvidia's help to take on Intel? They gained something like 6 percentage points on Intel this last quarter... and did it while their IGP only started to ship.

It would be quite difficult for nvidia to compete with Intel in the integrated market as they don't even has Intel FSB license. ATI on the other hand just recently extended their agreement with Intel.

I seem to remember some off the cuff quotes from nVidia personell a while back where they seemed to suggest with a lot of nudge nudge and wink winking that they were working on an Intel motherboard chipset.

I'd be surprised if it's something they haven't already got the ball rolling on...

Methinks nVidia is basing their future survival off "off the cuff quotes" lately since they have absolutely nothing solid of value to offer publically in their remarks. :(

If Nvidia had a license for p4 chipsets I would think it would have been in the news. That's not to say that they aren't working on obtaining one, but that certainly doesn't mean it's imminent.

Nvidia has a history of leaking this sort of stuff, nearly always as disinformation, spoliers, and just plain damage control when things are going wrong for them. Until it actually happens, I wouldn't trust any unofficial stuff. Heck, even Nvidia's *official* statements are spin and lies half the time.

An Intel motherboard chipset was in the works this Summer, that I know for sure. Extremely reliable stuff. And no wonder we don't know much about it, since my source described it as "the most secretive project he has ever seen at NVIDIA". I'm no longer in a position to get more information on it, however.

And don't expect to get too many accurate timeframes for it, as it seems even many people working on the project aren't authorized to know about it!

Second most secretive project(s) would be the Mobile/PDA chips, although I assume they were that way because when I asked, they were still preparing to buy that other company, and that was highly financial information.

Regarding the NV40, I don't know enough about the R420, but it seems pretty darn good to me. I don't see NVIDIA going anywhere this generation, and at worst, they'll remain nearly equal with ATI on a marketshare POV. It's really the NV50/R500 generation which matters, IMO.

And yet there are whispers all over the place, conveniently making their stock jump crazy amounts on days with no news at all. Plus apparently he had no trouble telling you, a company outsider, about it. They must have a different definition of "most secretive" than normal people.

I really wonder when we will see tangible informations on both R420 & nV40. Currently, we have only rumors. But hey, rumors on nV30 were over hyping, and on R300, thy were just plaily true, no ? ;)

When you're in good relations with people, and they believe there's no reason why this should be secret, they give you info. Anymore questions? :p
That came directly from my ex-primary source, of which 95% of what he said was true. So please...

P.S.: We'll have more NV40/R420 rumors whenever the rumor mongers will begin to believe it's time to push the "under-NDA" people they know to give them info, which most likely won't happen because nobody gives a ... about it anymore ;)
