NVIDIA GF100 & Friends speculation

It is pretty evident that the Radeon HD 5870 runs out of frame buffer looking at the 4xAA vs 8xAA numbers.

But since Fermi is the newest of the two, it should perform better. Just like the Radeon 9700 Pro bested anything else at its time with AA.

Fudzilla posted a rumor that the Eyefinity 6 edition was pushed back to the end of March. It sounds bad for people waiting for it But as a rumor, it makes sense. Nvidia lines up a bunch of benchmarks that the 5870 1GB runs out of memory to make the launch look good. ATI releases the 2GB Eyefinity6 at the same time and those benchmarks are no longer valid. Now that would be an ambush.

ATI would be smart to launch before or on the day of. Fermi reviews should be against the 5870 2GB edition. I can't imagine ATI screwing this up.

It wil lbe interesting to see what ati's response is. I wonder if the eyeinfintys aren't clocked higher aside from the increase in ram.

I wonder also at what point the framebuffer for the 470 and 480 run out. They are 1284 and 1512 correct ? It be interesting if there are some instances the 5870 2 gig out performs the gtx 280 because of its ram

As we all know it's quite playable on a Cypress with less than maxed out AF/AA.

I'm on a 30" monitor so have a slightly different perspective :) Besides, dropping settings is always an option but the standard is having everything maxed out.

I know slightly OT, but what's your native rez? I'm on a 23", 19x12 and enthusiast with 2xAA and 8xAF works nicely with occasional chugs. Not CoD fast, but very purdy.

I seem to recall seeing a slide indicating that they're not. However, AMD probably has an HD 5890 coming for April. After all, the 5870 is almost 6 months old.

April seems a bit too fast for the 5890, the 4890 was 9 months after the 4870 release wasn't it?

I also think AMD like to space things out a bit better and releasing a 5890 less than a month after the eyefinity6 edition might piss off a lot of people.

That hardly matters. Even if the 5890 slots in at $400 and the 5870 drops in price the 5970 is still only $600 and will be faster than a 5890 and cost less than two 5890s to warrent the cost.

Tho in june i'm sure amd can release a 5980 with fasters clocks also.

Personally I don't think they'd intro a 5890.

More likely would be 5870 EF6 replacing the 5870 price point, and shifting everything down 1 tier. I don't think power consumption will increase that much with < 3 displays in use, but the value-added features like really playable Eyefinity performance for most games should offset whatever performance advantages (~15%?) the 480 would have at a tentative $100 more.

5870:
EF6 - 400 (380)
2GB - ~350 (?Custom)
1GB - 300

5850 ~250
5830 ~-200
5770 ~140-150

Geez, 6 months and consistent pricing. Quite a feat I'd say- not even G92 managed that.

Is that really accurate?

Well did you see 5870 price drops? ;)(and  for my personal desires ofcourse)

Launching early now seems to be a choice tactic if the process doesn't f*ck you up too much - 6 months of free lunch!

Dave's chomping on cake must be more lavish than the whole team thought.

the prices are my estimates for what will be Cypress' first price drop. (it has to drop, since nVidia is running out of excuses to not be competitive- or close to competitive in the high end post-Fermi)

Sure ATI can continue selling it at $400 while 470 and 480 are shortaged till we reach the 8-9 month mark, but it just gives off quite a bad vibe and gives much consumers the possibility to wait out the shortages and such- grabbing buyers now and only a few will sidegrade to Fermi by then if performance isn't a big deal more.

Plus at 300, the 1GB 5870 automatically counters the upcoming GF104 as well till that drops... and as the 470 has already shown even with L2 niftiness (TBD), Cypress might be hard to beat with a further minimized chip even though it "scaled-up from RV770 badly" (ugh paraphrase).

I still haven't seen much of Daves product penetrating the laptop space though. I go into the shop, have a wander around the laptop section and I feel dirty seeing all the 4xxx laptops and Nvidia last generation GPU models. Where are the new ones?
