NVIDIA: Beyond G80...

Are we still expecting a paper launch next week. Haven't heard anything about the Ultra in a while.

Edit: Inq reporting 612Mhz again - that's kinda sad if true. Why bother?

They also say the memory (system?) was altered and that was giving a lot of benefits. so a 612 ultra would handily beat a 650 gtx.

does the gtx have the extra holes at the end of the boards too?

Let's see... a FOC 640/1000 GTX for $575 or 612/1010 Ultra for rumored 1K? What's wrong with that picture?

Yeah, it doesn't exactly "compute". There has to be something else to justify that huge price (and we know it's not a watercooled solution, per new reference air-cooler).

I have a faint theory (bear with me on this, please :D):
What if the 1000 USD price tag is actually for a 2 card G80 Ultra bundle kit ?
This could potentially increase the sales of high-end 650i SLI, 680i SLI and 680a SLI motherboards too.

But SLI for Vista isn't coming for .. weeks.. what would the use be?

Its a bit strange but it seems the 8800GTS 640 is actually being phased out. Theres like 2 models available from newegg, and one being out of stock. Although newegg doesnt represent the entire market, this can be noticed from quite a few major retailers. (zipzoomfly, ewiz etc)

With the release of the R600XT, could we possibly see a change in lineup?

i.e 8800ultra replaces the 8800GTX while the 8800GT or something or rather replaces the 8800GTS.

I just dont see the point in the ultra when its clocked at 614/1080 unless its there to replace a particular model. (Sort of like a refresh)

I see 6 640MB GTS's in stock at newegg..they even dropped the instant discount on the Leadtek version. Same at ZZF. But you're right, there are quite a few models out of stock. Maybe what you're seeing is the fallout from the early XT numbers - short term increased demand for the GTS from those who were waiting for R600? Although that wouldnt make much sense given the expected $400 price tag on the XT and the fact that it does indeed beat the GTS.

/shrug

Interesting, the maximum TDP is now at 175W.
The standard 8800 GTX was 177W, despite the lower frequencies.

Indication of better yields or perhaps even a new revision of the 90nm G80 core that will be shared with newer versions of the GTX and the GTS ?
I smell massive price cuts... ;)
