NVIDIA: Beyond G80...

I had figured from the beginning that it would have to be about 30% faster than 8800 GTX to be worthwhile to release. Looks like it should be about that fast.

On a side note, doesn't this remind you of the 7800 GTX 512MB product, where they kept everything the same but jacked up core and memory clocks? Of course, the memory is not doubling in this case like it did for the 512MB GTX, but still it's a similar strategy. By releasing the 7800 GTX and 8800 GTX to the market well in advance of the competition, it must have given NVIDIA time to stock up on some higher clocked versions.

Well they didn't really "stock up" on 7800GTX-512. Hopefully they have more product this time and a reasonable price.

Yeah, I realized that as I was typing. A better word would be "cherry pick". Personally, I don't think it's worth going for these ultra rare versions. They are super expensive, and get replaced by the higher performing real refresh within just a few months. But some people just have to have "the best", and they will pay through the nose for it.

Dang, why is everything Nvidia does always sexier than ATi's stuff? That cooler should crank the ego up a couple notches.

The cooler is actually the same, just the sandblasted black looks so much better than PimpMyRide Silver and Red.

heck, even my Current XFX card is so much sexier than any black/blue Sapphire Card I ever had.. I mean, how much black metal, grips and Bright yellow connectors can you actually fit on a card?

Are we comparing the same two coolers? The fan placement, design and grills are completely different......but yeah I agree that the black is contributing a lot to the sexy.

The position of the fan is different, but the cooling body and heat pipe setup is largely the same. The fan is the same model.

by the way, do you know who was the chief architect in the G80 design ? the same in charge of NV40 ( Emmett Kilgariff, ex-3Dfx rampage myth designer ) ?

Quite unlikely to be in charge of two teams at once - because one tends to make mistakes (if any) not only once.

Not sure what you mean - the XT cooler is rounded at the edge and the other cooler is square. It's also featureless as far as I can tell whereas that black cooler has grills cut out of it. Couple that with the different color scheme and they look strikingly different to me.

Overall project lead may have been Kirk, but that's probably a gross oversimplication, and there surely must have been multiple project managers working together. Clearly, this architecture was a huge milestone for the company. They simultaneously released an architecture that had full DX10 support, unified vertex/pixel shaders, and shader domain that could be clocked independently to previously unheard of levels for a GPU.

Yeah they should be proud and I'm sure they are. Too bad that success didn't translate into a stronger mid-range part :devilish:

I hope it's more a matter of NV not really showing their stronger midrange part yet. Their lineup is just begging for a card with 192 bit bus and 48 stream processors, or 256 bit bus and 64 stream processors (to complement the gap between 128 bit bus and 32 stream processors on the 8600 GTS, and 320 bit bus and 96 stream processors on the 8800 GTS). That would seem like a superbly well balanced lineup.

Look different but the only functional difference would be that the XT cooler sucks the air from the back of the card all the way to the slot bracket in a closed circuit, while the Ultra cooler just sucks it in from the middle and obviously is able to exhaust it everywhere, hinting at a much more relaxed cooling requirement. Strange thing though that this is the first time I've actually seen both companies use the same fan.
