NV35 for a Q2 2003 release??

Although the GeForce FX 5800 and 5800 Ultra have not made it to retail stores so far, Nvidia and some of its partners are now pretty sure that they will launch the next incarnation of the GeForce FX architecture, dubbed NV35, in the second quarter this year.

Catch the rest of the story here.

Maybe. Maybe not. Given recent history, I'll wait until it's in my hands before believing anything.

For example, R300 launches, NVIDIA start talking about their "next best new thing which is just around the corner". It's still around the corner as far as I'm concerned (in that it's not inside my machine, and not in boxes on shelves where I buy my components).

R350 launches, NVIDIA start talking about their "next best new thing which is just around the corner". Yeah, whatever. Give me NV30 and Linux drivers now and I'll pay attention to your noise.

Things like that from Nvidia, causes my bias meter (look at sig) to move closer to Ati. Nvidia, if your listening please take a note from ATI and announce your card 4-8 weeks from its availability to the public. I dont think NV has actually said anything concrete have they, or is this just a industry rumor.

later,

Well they certainly seem to me to have tipped off Anand and Tom and the other first-name wonders. So if it is industry rumour it seems to me that it's one started by NVIDIA. I would say I can't believe that those guys are falling for it again ... except they're first-name wonders so they're open to that sort of flattery.

Ho Hum. I don't have my bias meter on display, but it's certainly moving in the same direction as yours :)

The only thing Nvidia has actually said was they were showing off a surprise at GDConf, a demo with 4 Dawns, and saying they were showing it off with next generation production silicon. Note Tony Tamasi said he was showing Geforce FX on first silicon A01 at Comdex last year.

Anything else is speculation. Bleh the Geforce 5600/5200 launch video isn't available anymore. It was in the last minute or so of the video

Right, but that's the sort of thing you (NVIDIA) can say and just let the Internet rumour mills do the rest, right?

Digitimes wrote it on Monday:

Market share expansion to trigger price war in lower-end graphics card sector
Charles Chou, Taipei; Christy Lee, DigiTimes.com [Monday 10 March 2003]

Price competition is expected to be felt first in the low-end to medium-range graphics card market this year, as leading chip suppliers Nvidia and ATI Technologies are likely to aggressively expand their market shares in the sector to achieve their 2003 sales goals, local card makers said.

Compared to top-end products, the low-end to medium-range graphics cards enjoy a greater base of demand. According to sources, despite the chip suppliers’ recent introduction of the NV3x series and three new Radeon chips, the low-price NV18 and NV11 still account for a considerable portion of Nvidia’s wafer orders at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and ATI’s Radeon 7000 and 7500 products could also be seen in the low-end market.

Despite the looming price war, AMI Technologies, ATI’s agent in Taiwan, believed that the sharp decline in product ASP (average selling price) seen in 2002 may not occur again this year, as the company is ready to launch a range of new chips. In addition to its Radeon 9800 (R350), Radeon 9600 (RV350) and Radeon 9200 (RV280) series, ATI is also planning to introduce its new-generation R400 in the second half.

Nvidia, following the launch of its GeForce FX 5800 (NV30), GeForce FX 5600 (NV31) and GeForce FX 5200 (NV34), has also started pushing its NV35 into the production process. Samples of the chips are expected to be released in the middle of the second quarter.

So far... it has not even taped out yet... Edit2: I mean "not even taped out yet?"

Edit: I assume it's calendar quarter not financial.

:?: According to some folks who post here and live a few miles north of me it taped out in early to mid-January (presumably first silicon?)

Well assuming Jen-Hsun Huang meant what he said about production silicon being demoed, it had to be taped out already didn't it?

The Digitimes article didn't say it hadn't taped out. It said production samples wouldn't be ready until Q2.

"Taped out" refers to the plans for first silicon being sent to the fab. Going by the demonstration at GDC, Nvidia already has working NV35 silicon. However, it will go through a number of additional revisions before it's production ready, at which time samples will go out to AIBs. (This is what Digitimes says is expected in Q2.)

The video chip business (where everybody essentially uses exact duplicates of the reference design) must be different than the business we're in.

For the embedded market, where we provide a platform to develop on and the end customer does quite a bit of development, we get samples out to key customers as soon as we have working silicon (even if it needs hand holding, etc to boot, has non-functional sections)

Jen-Hsun said it was PRODUCTION silicon. So clearly, they are farther along than tape-out/first silicon. I'm not going to comment on it further except NVIDIA never said last year that they were running on production silicon , they said first silicon/A01.

If they are actually going to releese the nV35 what do you think nV30 owners gona feel?

I dont care thiough I think it will be wonderful to have nV35 here, nice competition.

However, if ATI does as good as a job with .13 process as they did with r300, I see nVidia lagging for a while.

Which owners? Reviewers don't count...
Apart from that, it's always like that, the next generation is just around the corner. And in this case, Nvidia probably should release it rather sooner than later if they can...

Nv35 has taped out. it currently exsists. its running. Its being tweaked etc. It is going to get introduced in May. (currently)

It would be exellent to have NV35's in the spring or early summer.

Just because NV35 is coming soon after NV30, it isnt like NV35 is coming too soon. if we had been on Nvidia's old, old scheduel, we'd have had NV35 last fall. with NV30 last spring. I cannot wait to see what NV35 can do, because i'm completely disappointed in NV30 and see no reason to concider the idea of buying one.

I didn't say that - I was asking... :)
I don't see the contradiction, though... :p

Yes, I knew it. (OFF: Do you know why its called "taped"? ;))

Hmm... I see. Souds reasonable.
Based on this, my guess for earliest release: June-July timeframe...

Yes, me too. Is this capable to beat R9800 Pro? If so, that's cool - ATI should work more intensively on R400 before its release... :D
