NPD September 2009

I know the numbers speak to it, but the skeptical nature of myself disbelieves it. If your selling more hardware than your counterpart, and you only have 2 multi platform titles in the top 10...I dunno.

EDIT: And to speak in an anecdotal contexte, I own 2 PS3's (1 now since the BR drive failed in 40gb model) and I've bought zero BR discs since then. Pure rental nature for myself. I'm a fan of ALL media. Just because we don't see an increase in BR "sales" doesn't disqualify the fact peeps buying to "rent".

New owners might be buying old games. e.g., LittleBigPlanet, Uncharted, R&C, Valkyria Chronicles, etc.

Top X latest games doesn't always tell the full picture. PS3 gamers may have different or more diverse taste too.

EDIT: Oh... forgot about people who buy a second PS3.

NGS2 was released on Sept 29th and GTPSP was released on Oct. 1st. Still low numbers for both, but noteworthy nonetheless.

I also agree with Patsu. Even though the PS3 HW got a nice bump, it's not like were going to see older titles pop up in the top 10. There's no doubt they also got a nice bump as well though.

just picked up a PS3 Slim for the exclusives... but as I have a 360 already, all my future multiplatform games are just simply going to stay on the 360. I have such a back log of things to do on the 360 (finishing my XNA project, playing the odd games), the PS3 purchase was mostly on a whim as I was upgrading a few other AV bits. I've only bought Killzone2 for the PS3 but haven't put it in the unit yet. $50 from amazon still seems a bit expensive for it, but it's the one game I was most curious about. UC2 will probably end up ordered, once I find time. I am questioning why I purchased, but it was my plan to wait for the Slim version since launch, so I had to bite.

Anecdotal evidence, but a colleague of mine told me he wanted to get a new, quieter BluRay player. He has so far used a launch PS3 unit (told him to vacuum it, which he hasn't tried yet). He wants to move the old PS3 upstairs. After looking around a bit however, he decided he's going to get a PS3 Slim instead of a standalone BluRay player, because he's very happy with the PS3 as a BluRay player, knows the Slim is much quieter, and likes the idea of being able to still play games like Buzz in the livingroom with his family/guests.

@Makattak: definitely play Uncharted 2, if anything. I just finished it, it's awesome. Also, just try Flower if anything just to have something relaxing to do inbetween shooters. ;)

I'm inclined to buy a slim too. I did get one for my mum/sister since my sister plays too and it's also the perfect 'entertainment system', covering it with blu-ray and convinient internet access from the tv.

I might get one for myself, though I'm still a bit hesitant because of no linux, no backwards-compatibility and the annoyance of finding ways to make all my game-saves work on the new console.

Halo ODST has supposedly sold about 2.5 million units on launch day, but that's probably a worldwide figure. Still quite impressive, especially in light of
1. all the online bitching about how it's not worth the price
2. the amount of work Bungie had to put in it compared to a full Halo game with new engine and all.

Still, considering that H3 is around 10 million by now, it is more or less what should be expected from the franchise.

I expected the PS3 number to be a fair bit higher, given it's a "relaunch" bump. I guess the Wii will continue to own this holiday season after all *shrug* Good numbers for all three systems at the end of the day however.

People still buying PS3 as a media player? Can we really expect these people to buy games? Some, yes. Most, no.

There is more than a 7 million difference in the userbase between PS3 and 360. Even larger compared to Wii.

It is harder to see PS3 games in the top 10 if people arent buying titles at a much higher rate than they do on the competitive platforms

Exactly, the Top 10 should be viewed more from an install base perspective than a monthly hardware sales correlation IMO.
